I get mcQueen, he had two guys in front of him and was never going to get a game. Think this is probably best for Reed's development since he was never going to get enough game time for us, but I had considered him our backup rb, so wonder what our plan is there now he's gone.

Yeah can see that and targett is playing well at the moment, I just wondered if McQueen had more about him going forward, he started as a left winger and was always more impressed with his forward play. thought he could of been a decent option but good luck yo him and hope he comes back even better. I've said before I actually rate reed McQueen and Sims good enough to be starters for Southampton but we've packed the squad with so many expensive foreigners that they can't get s look in. maybe hughes plan is get them all up to speed match ready, flog of all the dead wood next summer and bed them into the team next year. who knows 😬 hope they all do well.

I think it's good that we're sending these players out on loan. It'll be good for them to get the experience. Instead of playing under 23 football. However, my one issue is that looking at the teams from the weekends no one has actually started any games, apart from Jones and Carrillo who actually scored this weekend vs Real Madrid.

Well guys, girls and eds. the dawn of possibly one of our biggest games in many years up there with cup finals and promotion from championship. tomorrow is massive and although not damming, I think anything but a win is a bad result. Hopefully we can upset them and their fans and west ham get deducted points for being uncontrollable in their £5 a year rent football stadium, for which we pay the policing and security for . hopefully a massive win and any fan brave enough to venture to west ham stays safe. come on you saints!

Where did that come from, got a feeling FF has played his last game this season McCarthy did exactly what he doesn’t do commanded the area and came out of the 6 yard box with confidence. Why has it taken so long to get him between the sticks? Do you think us telling the club for ages has helped. Man U were pretty poor, Boufal and Hojbjerg were outstanding.

May I say I am not in agreement with a fair few of my saint fans inregard to FF he's a great goalie that souldn't be underrated more over be valued. Yes he hasn't been at his best this season but he's committed himself to saints that would never be taken granted.

Personally I hate the fact we again in process of going backwards as we paid indirectly the 200 million backk to Southampton new owners.
Only another 125 million to go! I've been asking for while they invest some money to buy Eastleigh FC so it becomes just like a Barcelona B team.
It can become our Academy's wing to bring through many more youth players! This way they can share our training ground as there is no conflict of insterest and would safe costs. I hope you guys agree with me?

Ff is a good keeper. He's been suffering with awful form for a year. He's lost his club and country place which isn't a decision taken lightly I'm sure. What I saw today from McCarthy us a gk commanding his area, who looked mobile and ability to get down with good decision making. I don't know whether Ff lost confidence after his injury or having a crisis of confidence but a gk instills the confidence throughout the team. Ff has caused anxiety amongst the back four.
I'm not saying McCarthy totally has sorted that today but it was great to see a goalkeeper claiming crosses and holding low shots as opposed to shoveling them away. he deserves to start again Tuesday.

All I am saying he's out of form and for a while so deserved to be dropped. However, I am hoping that my follow saint fans can tamper their views to be more constructive and suport him in both good and bad times. Reaching out to a player in bad form can make a player feel better about themselves.
Please step into his shoes right now and ask yourself how would you be feeling?
Nobody sets out to have a bad day at the office but it happens to us all from time to time. Believe me FF has the ability to be a top top player when his form returns. You guys can help make the difference by giving him the support when he needs it the most. FF has committed himself to Saint for rest of his playing career that shouldn't under valued in my view.
Imagine how you would feel if you saw with own eyes the difference you made when his form returns?
I remember when he returned form injury after several months out and kept 6 clean sheet in a row and we shot up the league table because of that form.
We are suppoters So please please support him when he needs you the most.
Sing his name while he sits on the bench over the next couple of weeks he will train harder and feel better about himself because that support. Slowly his form will return because you did your job and supported him.
Believe me it's a win win. Don't be a hen pecker choose to be a supporter.

Not trying to be cynical but when you say he committed his future to Saints I don’t know what you mean, if you mean he signed a contract then that is not a commitment. VVD signed a 6 year contract and then look what happened. I don’t want to run FF down too much but your point of the clean sheet business was primarily down to our top class defence at the time and if you look at his shots against and save ratio it wasn’t that impressive. FF is a fair keeper at his best but not flexible enough to play at PL level in my opinion. Don’t know why but watched McCarthy yesterday and felt confident. Might go pear shaped on Tuesday who knows but his all round ability and reading of the ball seems superior to FF on this single occasion. We’ll see what happens.

That's a very human and kind view you've taken with regards to FF 4thelove. if I were to step in FF sizeable boots right now I'd feel embarrassed at being paid £70+k a week, putting in shocking performances, losing my England and saints place. I'd feel like I needed to seriously up my game, train harder, work harder, play much much better and battle to regain the trust of my manager, teammates and fans. He should have been dropped a while ago and they stuck with him. fair enough. But he has been very poor for sometime.

I don’t see your point about criticisms hurting him, I highly doubt FF is reading these posts and part of his job as a professional footballer, and a well paid one like that, is to be thick skinned and deal with criticism. The media and fans pay his salary, and they have a right to openly debate his performances. So in the nicest possible way, I don’t really care how the criticism feels for him.
Bad days at the office and dips in form happen, but this has gone beyond that now. It doesn’t help that by all accounts, including one of the Eds on the site, his work ethic could be better. I’ve seen many interviews in which he blames bad luck for his poor performances, which tells me he’s not likely to turn it around quickly.
I haven’t criticised him unduly, but he needs to be dropped. Of course, if he works hard and makes himself our best option again, or is called into action due to injury, then he’ll have my support again.
Support unwaveringly during games, criticise fairly in between them. Your approach may make sound nice, but it is of little help.

I think it's safe to say we are all frustrated saints fans right now and have been for a few years with all the coming and goings!
We've seen and have had and still have some world class players on our books but It's unlikely we are going to win anything I'm afraid to say because we've had real chances to win something other then just pride.
Because we've had some exciting players but the club's steadbillly has been far more important then boom and bust that has happen to us other clubs in the past. meaning they chose to sale players for profit few times. Because of this players have lost faith in the clubs direction. They in turn has focus their mind to put themselves first.
This great club has been run well since we saw the back of Rupert Low.
Until we've paid back the other 125 million back to the new controlling we won't compete against the top boy's like it or not that's reality of it.
It's why I feel we should focus on buying Eastleigh Fc and being them up to league one as an academy wing So we can develop 80%
Of our first team from it and we need to be ruthless about it if each player hasn't made half a dozen first team by the time they are 21 thanwe should sod them off. This way we can complete and keep the players as we won't need to balance the books. We then keep a group of players together as they develop together it's likely they would become firm friends giving them a team spirit and unbreakable bond.

Just as a thought I wonder how ings will handle the intensive training regarding injury/ protection etc. because if he keeps up this form surely he's got to be close to an England call? 6 goals in 11 games all things considered to date doesn't seem a bad return and his work rate was incredible (along with everyone's)
{Ed0333's Note - he really is an selfless workhorse. We loved him at Liverpool and really wanted him to succeed but he was never gonna unsurp Salah, Mane and Firmino. Also injuries didn’t help is cause. I hope he stays injury free and scores bundles for you. He deserves some sunshine.

It was evident that what we don't get to see so much was as klopp said about him when he left much as you're saying there what he gives to the team, how well he is thought of and the effort he puts in.

Right . don't shoot me down I'm a huge saints fan, always have been always will be. Of course I want to see them playing top class football in the top leagues. The period after they returned to the Premier League relight my fire hearing the praise lavished on the board, the managers and players. But it's clear we need a reset, to rebuild or at least figure out an identity. With that said would the championship be the worse thing in the world? I don't mean forever but to help us rebuild. The players out on loan (academy products) could come back in, we could gut the squad of those stealing a living and backroom staff doing the same. and rebuild around the core as we did coming through the league's last time. Why did lallana, schneiderlin, Shaw etc do so well and how do we get back to having the likes of Sims, McQueen and jwp standing out. Great to see the younger players given a run last night but woukd love to see it more regularly.

Simply drop down a division, wave a magic wand and then come back up the following season. The Championship is an extremely hard league with many excellent teams. for one I would never want to drop down out of the premier, that alone would set the club back light years from a financial point of view!
We could be stuck there for many seasons or worse drop down another division. No thanks. The Change needs to start now so we can stay in the top division.

Rayzer, I would take relegation and a positive, committed rebuild over another mediocre journeyman manager seeing us relegated this season or next, playing turgid football and losing more often than winning.
I would take entering a competitive league where we have a chance of winning something or going through to the play-offs on the back of a positive rebuild, giving our academy talent a chance and allowing ourselves the time to build a squad and identity over staying in an uncompetitive league monopolised by 7 rich clubs and the others all scrapping for something between 8th and 17th place.
I would take winning more games than we lose over the course of the season in the Championship, reigniting the positive feeling around our club and our football once more, over paying any more money to watch our team lose to teams both big and small, surrendering points meekly and living with the ghost of relegation looming as early as every Christmas.
I do not believe the Premier League is the be all and end all of football in this country. None of us watch football and support Southampton because of the Premier League. We love the game and will follow our team wherever they are. The Premier League is simply a marketing tool and a money-making venture for businessmen. Give me cheaper tickets any day. We may be on television less but if more of us can afford to go more regularly, what’s the real loss?
Unless we are bought by a super rich person seeking little to no return on the money they inject into our club, we will never be able to compete with the elite in the country. Money has ensured that there is a distinct divide between the haves and have nots. At least in the Championship, we would get to be one of the former. Perhaps its double standards to bemoan the Premier League’s money-gap whilst accepting relegation with a Financial parachute payment that injects more money into our coffers than most Championship rivals, but this is not an ideal world where football is played merely for sport rather than the money. So whilst money continues to make the game go round, if there’s a financial hand-out on offer we should take it. If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em. Unless someone has an idea how to take money out of the equation and make the game truly competitive on a level playing field again?

Ben I'm not saying its as simple as waving a magic wand of course not and i'm more than aware of how strong the championship is now. My point is merely that as a team and a whole company they are quite clearly lost from top to bottom . the football is bleak season tickets sales are dropping massively with people who have bought every year for 30 years plus deciding not to renew. Managerial sacking after managerial sacking. Now we've started on to board. Player business in and out has been poor for 3 seasons. When I've watched other teams such as Sunderland, stoke etc get relegated I've thought good they deserve it. I've never gmfelt that about saints and of course don't want it but can you say, if you were a fan of someone else you wouldn't think as a club, from board, owners to managers and players. we deserve it.

Even though relegation to the championship seems a distinct possibility there are obviously no guarantees that we will be able to attract the right players to pad out our academy products so that we're in with a chance of getting back to the premier league within 3 or 4 seasons, because after that it becomes more and more difficult as other teams relegated from the premier league could and probably will have better squads and more money than us. Whatever the case I don't believe that MH is the man to take us forward.

I would not be surprised if MH became director of football and a new manager brought in. We will be relegated unless we sign/ loan a proper target man in January. I feel the same as Figo.
I love football because of its beauty, its drama and the passion it stirs in the stands. I am a fan of Southampton FC (since 2010) because of the kind of football they play and what they stand for.
I love seeing the youth rise up and play with passion and excitement, I love the buzz around the stadium and that feeling of belonging when every fan is behind the team. The fanbase appears splintered; an opportunity to rebuild the club may be exactly what we need. I'd rather watch my side play with passion and joy in the Championship than continue to frustrate fans as they do now. I know that there are flaws in this view - the practical side - but football is a sport of entertainment like any other, and I'd accept relegation if that was the cost.

Now intrigue has the better of me. I would be interested to see if reed or hunter will talk about about what is actually going on behind the scenes at st Mary's. I was amazed after reading mlt book of the politics effing up the club back then and wonder if we will get an insight into what's happening now. Season ticket holders can still enjoy whichever opposition turn up. Which most weeks would be a good team with an attacking approach and plenty of efforts on goal - sadly that wasn’t today, when I don’t think Newcastle had any shot on or near target.
Next match, we could just give all the squad’s academy produced players a run out, (JWP, Targett, etc) and see if we can do anything remotely sparkling, exciting or quickly.
Mark Hughes - Please don’t throw it all away.
I’m assuming our thrilling match will be last on MOTD tonight!

I think the point that is trying to be made is questioning if Hughes is right for the job. I actually think the thought process of a lot of fans is wanting to see the club return to the style of how they played in the couple of seasons after promotion back to the pl. We played confident high press football and managers and pundits couldn't lavish enough praise on us. then came the background. the black box, the scouting and transfer policy was admired and studied up and down the country, and possibly further afield. Now it seems those have all changed or adapted from those exciting times to what I csn only see as a hope of pl longevity and stability, it looks like we play with a huge fear of losing and our transfers of late have been supposedly out of the box ready to go. however I don't think its working, we have conducted our transfer business terribly for a good couple of years now and I fear 2 things, firstly we keep going through managers like underpants as they're being drilled that whatever you do don't lose and secondly if, if we get relegated would we have the structure in place to handle the championship, which has become a very strong, very rich league. I hope someone takes the breaks off and we're able to find that suitable balance of excitement and fight but right now, top to bottom I'm not so sure where we are or where we go.

No one at the arsenal game. The home atmosphere can get pretty sour quick granted but it seems to be more of a blip. These fans are the same as any other year. Hopefully now we've hit that magical 40 points they can play with less pressure and with a couple of winnable home games (on paper) it would be nice to see the team squash any feeling they might have about always losing at home.

I think Cedric could feature. We're going to be pinned down the wings so need a more defensive minded. Think valery is great and one of my favourite players atm. Agree it'll be a 442 and just hope we can break fast and take our chances. The worry is gping behind to an early goal could see the heads drop and then it's pick a score line. i'm hopeful of a good performance and if i get that. Then I'm happy 😬.

Totally agree, I loved reading how straight talking he was, anyone not pulling their weight will be gone but I agree fitness and confidence aren't something that can be switched on and off. confidence may take a boost and I'd settle for a draw today, although for me a win is the only result that will do.
