Haven't seen us linked with him at all but has Noa Lang been linked with anyone at all Ed's? Watched him a few times for Club Brugge this season and looks a great player, would love to see us make a move for him.

{Ed002's Note - He is simply on loan and will return to Ajax.}

Talk of Harry Winks to Saints. What a signing if we can pull that off.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

09 Apr 2021 20:37:11
I agree with you Manny but tell me - what would your first choice midfield 4 be if everyone was fit and available. Personally, I think it’s a very hard call but Winks offers more going forward than some of the options. As you say, would strengthen the squad but choosing a first XI would get that bit harder!

Competition for the first XI is crucial. Pep has that headache and he’s doing ok.

Agree0 Disagree0

I wasn’t suggesting that completion was a bad thing - it’s a very good thing. I was simply saying that for the first time in many years I’m struggling to see what the strongest team would be and a little bit of me wonders whether Ralph does (great guy that he is! ) . Hopefully he will call it right next Sunday!

Hi Eds. Any news on the American takeover. Is it still a possibility?

{Ed002's Note - I am not aware of anything noew but there are several groups looking to invest in Premier League clubs.}

I just want to say something that I when say out loud sounds madness considering some of the results we've had and that is . For me I believe Ralph Hasshenutle is untouchable.

Don't get me wrong every manager can have their faults, but what I mean is, in the wake of certain results and recent run I think some around the world would consider that stackable. However for me the idea has never once entered my mind. When Ralph has the players he needs to field the way he wants to play you can see that it works. Depth is an issue, along with circumstances and VAR.

If we found ourselves in similar results situation with puel, pelliguno or hughes I wouldn't be saying this. With Ralph though it's different.

It’s time to take stock. Various reporters bumming us up when we are playing like a bottom three. team. International PLAYER status ( 8 ) count for nothing when week after week we are outplayed and outwitted by well structured teams without many recogniseable players. Whilst we have endured many injuries and poor ref. decisions it’s time to weed out overpaid pretenders for next season. Maybe Ralph could do with the shared support of a sharp no.2 to discuss substitutions player selection tactics etc. Future plans need to be activated right now in order to progress next season.

Agree0 Disagree0

25 Feb 2021 13:21:31
I believe a shake up of his coaching team is needed. I totally agree a stronger No2 may be required.

Untouchable? - No, but who would replace him? The only one I thought of was Benitez.

Any thoughts?

Agree0 Disagree0

25 Feb 2021 16:07:16
I think you’ll find Ralph is someone who likes to make the decisions. He stands up the whole game and very rarely consults his coaching staff! He doesn’t even stand near his coaching staff! Richard K the assistant is a very knowledgeable and experienced man.

Agree0 Disagree0

25 Feb 2021 16:12:33
Overpaid pretenders : one standout pretender is Redmond, to be playing him upfront is bizarre.
Not quite good enough - sadly I think Bertrand is past his best by quite a way.
Stephens - simply not good enough

The bednerek and vestergard partnership worked very well, but now Salisu is on the team sheet, that partnership is gone.

Vokins going on loan to Sunderland? Surely he wouldn't go unless we have someone else lined up already? Maitland-Niles? Somebody else?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

31 Jan 2021 08:36:46
I really don't get it. AMN is right footed and not what we need.

Especially after lasts nights potential injuries to Diallo and Walcott.

It's nice to see we have youth coming through, but I feel this is to much at once.

Call me absolutely bonkers but we have both of those positions covered with guys on loan. Lemina and Elouynossi.

Elouynossi is doing well, albeit in Scottish league, but we've had some great players from that league.

Lemina, personally I rate him and could at least do a job until the end of the season.

If they're saying we have no money for players, then surely this is an option, or a case of Ralph being very stubborn.

Sooo. what do people think about the potential of Ralph leaving? Even heard a rumour of JWP to Everton or Spurs? And now Vesty to the scousers? Thoughts anyone?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

12 Jan 2021 21:51:26
I think we are as safe as can be with Ralph and JWP being loyal to our club but Vesty has not been treated that well in his Saints career so may be drawn by the money and the lights. Having read the finances today may be if we can get good money for him we should.

Agree0 Disagree0

15 Jan 2021 09:57:33
I think if we can keep Vestergaard to the end of the season we should. Hopefully, if he can have a better second half of the campaign and increase his stock. Selling him for 40m+ would give us enough transfer budget for the summer. Where we could look to sign, a new CB, new fullback and new attacking mid.

I think the rumour of Ralph leaving is just lazy journalism and so are the other rumours? Don't see why JWP would go to Everton, they're a bigger club than Saints but I don't think he can achieve anything else there that he wouldn't be able to achieve with us. Also, he's probably our most expensive player. I can't imagine we'd let him go for less than 60m.

Agree2 Disagree0

15 Jan 2021 09:38:03
vestergard was given a hard time when tbf he was not playing well. i would of grabbed 23m rumoured from leicester. the player he is today he is worth 40m min and he should also remember the manager backed him and has given him another chance which he has grabbed with both hands. i would rather sell 4-5 fringe players and keep him and sit him down with a new contract.

With Obafemi off to Swansea on loan (apparently) and him not really looking like he's in Ralph plans I would love to see us make a move for Balogun, any chance of this happening Ed's? I know there's apparently 15 clubs interested in him.

{Ed002's Note - No, I don't see it.}

Believable0 Unbelievable0

08 Jan 2021 22:57:11
Why would we? Yes we could have him as another option, but Ralph is building his squad around a core of players, with excellent ‘stand ins’ especially making full use of the academy. He has created a tactical plan that is being taught to every level at Southampton.
I think we will see a reduction in buys and an increase in bringing players through.

Agree0 Disagree0

09 Jan 2021 08:03:01
Because Obafemi clearly isn’t in Ralph’s plans and we all know that Shane Long cannot score a goal. Dan N’Lundulu is currently our only back up goal scorer, why not got and get another young goal scorer who’s a free agent at the end of the season so would be available for a cut price fee?

Agree0 Disagree0

10 Jan 2021 12:42:00
Obafemi isn't in Ralph's plans because he's lazy and can't or won't play the way that Ralph is asking him to. I for one am more than happy to leave the decisions to Ralph. He seems to be making a bloody good job of it.

Agree0 Disagree0

14 Jan 2021 21:53:17
Our selection is not just about a young player who can score and is a free agent. A huge emphasis is put on character, lifestyle etc when Southampton are interested in someone, they watch, watch, listen, enquire, watch and watch . often in ‘secret’. You can be absolutely sure Ralph knows exactly who he wants . at the moment he is seeing who he can ‘tune’ . Vestergaard and Prowsey spring to mind.

for leicester to let gray run down his contract is clearly an issue. i am not convinced rogers is a great manager he has a plan a but does he have any other. sit deep and hit on the break. gray and ihenacho have not developed at all in their time at the club. would imagine gray would be a good acquisition especially if cheap or free but would depend on buying into the plan and being prepared to wait.

Agree0 Disagree0

15 Jan 2021 10:22:51
I think Ralph ran out of patience with him. When Ralph first joined, he was heavily invested in Obafemi, you could tell that he wanted him to succeed and must've spent a lot of time on him. And from the sounds of it, Obafemi hasn't returned the favour. So now Ralph will focus his attention on N’Lundulu and Tella.

There's no doubt that Obafemi has bags of talent and is a good finisher and is a good poacher but if he's not willing to be a team player, we're best off letting him have a decent career.

Hi Ed’s any news on any incomings or outgoings for the saints in this January transfer window? The only thing I’ve heard so far is LB Brandon Williams and LW Demarai Gray. any truth to these two? Cheers as always. Sam.

{Ed002's Note - I cannot answer on the timings but don't expect much in January. There has been interest in:
Brandon Williams (LB) a loan consideration.
Joey Veerman (CM) Southampton may approach Heerenveen again to see if an agreement can be reached.
Demarai Gray (RW) not a CA pick but there might be a real push for him from Everton and Southampton could look to a deal.
In terms of departures:
Yan Valery (RB) Jonathan Barnett would like to see him move on to kick start his career.
Southampton also need to deal with the contracts running out in the summer or cut the players lose:
Harry Lewis (G)
Ryan Bertrand (LB)
Sam McQueen (LB)
Theo Walcott (RW)

05 Jan 2021 12:30:22
Extending Bertrand for another year and bringing in Williams permanently in summer I think would be decent business, I can see KWP and Williams being a great young English full back pairing who we can make superb money on in a few years.

I’d also love Theo to stay, he’s been awesome for us and Everton don’t need him and he doesn’t want to play for them. Gray would make sense on a free, gives us options and he’s the kind of player we normally improve and can make a profit on.

Veerman as a JWP backup would also be a good piece of business, but for once I don’t think major changes are needed.

Agree0 Disagree0

05 Jan 2021 13:30:02
Agree on the options stated and the reasoning. Wouldn't it be amazing though if we got a new owner who wanted to build instead of continually strip for profit. Similar to what's happening at Leicester and to a lesser extent, Villa. We have the manager, just need the right owner.

Forster Stephens Long Diallo Salisu Ings Redmond

Tonight might be the first time we have an impact off the bench for several months!

Truer words were never spoken 😂. Sign of a good side, shake off a comeback loss, not play great but still get the win. Fifth! And at home to bottom next week.

But my word, that was never, ever a penalty. If the foul is given for the tussle, it is clearly outside the box. I was all for VAR until lockdown but it is being implemented terribly and has cost Brighton what could be an important point.

We do seem to get lucky with the decision though, I believe we’re in the top few sides for benefitting the most from VAR decisions so maybe we should keep it for our sake!

Credit definitely has to go to Vestergard. I was told by one of the U23 players that he can pass the ball with either feet to anywhere on the pitch, along the ground or over the top.
Well I watched since then and wow, can this man pass very accurately. Clearly Ralph has spotted his potential and encourages his passing anytime he likes. I’ve also noticed that V now seems to take up different positions at set pieces ie standing in more space, running onto the ball. He used to be ‘lost in the noise’ surrounded by other players. This reminds me of good ol Claus L, he scored only 2 goals in over 400 professional games, but was up for virtually every dead ball situation. I used to think, ‘get out the way’ . well Vestergard is now positioning himself superbly and the goals are flying in!

Hi Ed's, do you know if Southampton are following any of the free agents available admittedly they're mostly injury prone players but there's some great talent amongst the list. I know there was paper talk about one or two of them before they were released and wondered if it was just that please.

{Ed002's Note - Not so sure about the freebies. There are half a dozen post deadline possible transfers to the Premier League - but again not so sure.}

What a waste of £19m! Believe we did something similar though for only about £4m on buying Vegard Forren about six years back. Never should have allowed Pellegrino get his hands in the chequebook in the first place.

Now hopefully Hoedt is back off to Lazio and Boufal back to Angers, and we should have a nicely trimmed squad. Disappointed to see Klarer go, I believe big things were tipped of him.

Agree1 Disagree0

05 Oct 2020 19:26:05
If we can get Hoedt and Boufal off the wage bill as well, it will put us in a stronger position during the January window if we NEED to do business. All of the bad transfer decisions after RK left the club had put us in a dodgy financial position. While I respect every player that togs out for us, all the above players were surplus to requirements. RH has done a great job if all those players are now off the wage bill.

Has anyone heard anything about whether Gunn is going anywhere? All the talk a couple of weeks ago was that either Gunn or Forster would go but as FF has been on the bench so far this season I can't see Gunn getting the No.2 keepers spot back so surely needs to move for the sake of his career.

Hello again, so deadline day approaches. lots of rumours about various players. anything looking likely? Ideally we need replacement for PEH, a winger and another striker, possibly another CB too. What do you think EDs?

{Ed002's Note - I know nothing more than what has been said. The club has an interest in Ibrahima Diallo who is a DM/M. They have also spoken with Chelsea about available players for a loan and Spurs - Ryan Sessegnon (LB/LW) loan enquiry from Southampton and Burnley.}

We looked a lot better over the last 2 games at CB and Salisu will only strengthen us there. Diallo now gives us options at DM with Oriol and JWP. A bit more creativity in midfield or up front would be icing on the cake now.

Latest link is Ibrahim Sangare, Toulouse box-to-box mid, available for £7m, good things heard of him, part of a relegated side last season but so was Doucoure, but surely worth the punt.

I'll take anyone at this point.

Fits the Saints policy. Only 22 years old. Quite physical and a decent tackler/ passer. Could fit nicely into Ralph's way of playing and at £7-£8 M fairly priced. I think 1 or 2 other clubs are interested. Let's hope.

The swap deal of Butland-Gunn is apparently back on the cards. Really not what we should be prioritising and can't say I rate Butland very highly having nearly gone down to League 1 with stoke.

Also hearing nothing on a CM in recent days. Only a couple of weeks to go. That poll where Saints fans were most optimistic for the new season isn't looking too smart anymore.

Very frustrating watching Saints today. Feel Jack Stephens spends most of the game ball watching and has little or no awareness. We're suffering from having no real protection of the back 4 by a quality Defensive midfielder - Romeu is back up at best. SOLUTION: Get Salisu in for Stephens and buy a quality defensive midfielder asap.

Agree2 Disagree0

20 Sep 2020 13:54:39
Don’t understand the reason for extending Stephens both this week and last week has shown how susceptible he is to the long ball, ball watches like there’s no tomorrow. Surely Salisu is a better option even if he’s not fully up to speed with how Saints do things. Agree with Marty that Romeu is not the answer for Hojbjerg replacement.

Agree1 Disagree0

21 Sep 2020 12:57:59
Let’s go left field.

Salisu comes in as CB with Stephens moving to DMC. He is not too bad on the ball, he can spot a long ball and can tackle. His pace let’s him down but could do a job patrolling/ protecting the back four?

21 Sep 2020 16:03:18
I'm having trouble working out what has changed in the players minds in the last month. They were playing top 6 football at the close of last season and players like Stephens were putting in top rate performances. like that against Man City. The game is the same as are the personel yet the fizz has fizzled out.?

14 Sep 2020 10:08:44
Levy wouldn’t pay the £40m+ we’d want. I would want £60m at least. And why would he knowingly go to Spurs to be bench fodder for Kane? Money. But hopefully he has more pride than that playing for his boyhood club. Hopefully.

Agree0 Disagree0

14 Sep 2020 10:34:17
Unfortunately if Spurs offered £30M + I think our board would seriously consider selling him. I really don't think that Danny would want to go there, like you say SaintGGsy just to warm the bench and come on for 10 minutes when Maureen decides that Kane isn't going to score.

Agree0 Disagree0

15 Sep 2020 09:16:10
I hope we're not that greedy, that we would sell a prime 20+ goals a season striker for only 30m. I don't think we would, we held out until we received 75m for VVD.

Hi Ed it's been reported in our local paper today that spurs have made an official enquiry after Ings, was wondering if you had an further insight on the situation please? Ings also hasn't signed a new deal with talks on going. I can imagine the chance to play under Jose and the chance to play alongside some of the players at spurs could be quite attractive for any player.

{Ed002's Note - Danny Ings (S) Spurs have been told by one of his representatives that the player is not available and that he would not be interested in being a bench warmer which would kill off international hopes.}

Hi Ed
Things have moved on quite a bit since your August update and a number of the ins / outs you listed have either happened, gone elsewhere or seem to be staying put.
Are you aware of any fresh activity?
Thanks.

{Ed002's Note - It has moved on a bit with Emmanuel Dennis (F/RW) but Brugge has placed a significant €20M price tag on the player that Newcastle, Brighton and Watford see as far too much. The player has also been watched by Lille, Southampton, Monaco, Sheffield United, Sampdoria and Borussia Dortmund - and Southampton could see if a deal can be done at a better price involving Hoedt as part of the deal. There is a complication to be addressed in that Anderlecht is more attractive to WH but they only want a loan.}
