Sorry to see Jan Bednarek to leave, always liked him as a player. I feel some criticism against him was unjustified. Ramsdale looks like he's off, I hope it works out well for him, another player who I feel always tried his best
My worries are : AA has been woeful preseason following on from the same whilst on loan at WBA, Brereton Diaz ditto but with Sheffield Utd. Archer also has not stamped a claim on a strikers spot and WS doesn't seem to rate Stewart.
From what I am told no club has moved heaven and earth for Dibling but today Brentford have enquired but want a deal much lower than Saints valuation. Ipswich have enquired about Downes, Rangers want Fraser not Edozie. Ajax want Sugawara on loan and Birmingham want Edwards but Saints are not going to sell him.
Interest is starting to hot up.

Given the absolute state of last season, anyone being sold wouldn’t upset me too much. If we get money in from them, it allows Still to build his own team. I imagine we are as always tight with the figures so need to sell to buy, but the more we get out of the door the more quality we can hopefully get in.
Dibling will go, so will Ramsdale - they’re too good not to. THB, Sugawara, ABK, Downes, Armstrong, Diaz and Archer aren’t as good as they think they are, but would all be handy in the Championship. Any of them going wouldn’t be a bad thing.
I still think we will get a lot of movement - the big clubs are sorting out their front lines, meaning the mid table clubs will then use the cash they have to sort theirs, and will look to find deals or spend big on quality - once that’s done, they’ll buy in other areas. As we don’t fall into the first category, it’s just a waiting game or seeing what interest we get overseas.
We need a GK, RB, CM, CAM. With Ramsdale and Dibling money, we should be able to do that. I don’t think they will go for CBs - we bought potential players two years ago in Edwards and Wood - and we have five strikers on the books all of similar quality. We won’t be able to afford to splash out for more.
Problem area for years has been in attacking midfield - we haven’t had a properly good winger since Mane left - but if still goes back 3 then it’ll be more on #10s hence the importance of Fernandes, though I think he may be off too, purely for the fact that we could double or triple our money in a year.
Two weeks to Wrexham, I think we’ll be unpleasantly surprised by a 1-2 loss!

It’s deeply worrying. Broadly speaking, we’re looking to off load the better half of the squad, recoup some money and rebuild. All that with a novice manager and a pool of players who struggle to beat Eastleigh among others. Granted, they were pretty meaningless friendlies but nevertheless one looks for green shoots of optimism. Nothing.
So what baffles me, is how some of our respected posters on this forum believe we are strong candidates for promotion? Our squad was far better last time round when we dropped into the Championship.
This time, as I’ve repeatedly said, we are mid-table at best. As I said, deeply worrying.

I still think we have a good shot at promotion. Our defence is more inexperienced than last time but a Downes, Charles and Fernandes midfield would be solid. Robinson is a good upgrade on Edozie. We have a fit (for now) Stewart, plus Archer, Armstrong and Downs so 4 good 2nd div strikers vs 2 last time.
I can see a slow mid table start as the team and manager adjust then climbing up to the playoffs with our superior squad depth and fitness over the winter months.
With Saints nothing would surprise me though and depends who stays, fights and finds form.

If you’re right (and I hope that you are) the January window will be key. By then we should know where the gaps are and who can and cannot cut it. I think a lot will hang on whether we see the Armstrong of old or the latest version - slow in mind and second best in challenges.

A lot will depend on 5 things
1. If our strikers can replicate previous Championship successes
2. If players that excelled at mid table sides like Edwards, Charles and Wood can perform at top 5 level
3. How fast an almost new 11 vs last season, plus young manager can gel
4. How well Birmingham, Leicester, Coventry and Wrexham perform
5. Who comes in and who goes in the summer and Jan.
10 sides have a shot at promotion. I am hedging my bets and predicting 5th/6th behind Ipswich, Leicester, Sheffield Utd and Birmingham, plus maybe Coventry/Wrexham.

It’s definitely a hard league to call.
Outside of Southampton, fans across the other clubs are tipping Saints as one of the favourites to go up.
Which can be a hindrance if we set up to not lose rather than go out to win games.
That winning mentality has been a scarce commodity of late and I just hope that Will can boost confidence levels.
Each day brings news of other leavers - Rambo all but gone and a surge of interest in Fernandes.
What will give me nightmares is seeing McCarthy back in goal.

Hi Guys,
I told you 6 months ago that Saints were negotiating the signing of Sverre Nypan. They have messed around and now all the big boys are looking at him. Saints are also losing a lot of young talent because they are messing around over extended and new contract offers. Moder has been sold by Brighton for 1.2 mill to PSV as he is soon out of contract, good player that we have missed! At least Cornet looks to have left?.
No rumours of signings just departures atm.

As I told you 4 months ago, Saints are trying to sign Sverre Nypan but are facing huge obstacles to completing a deal. Nypan is the next Odeggard, fingers crossed we get him.

JWP getting closer, on loan. Yuri will be a purchase, Flamengo in serious financial trouble and must raise several millions before end of September. If JWP doesn't sign then Yuri will be a 2.5/3.00 loan with option to buy. Don't be surprised to see Fraser or Willian signed after closure of window.

Sky sports reporting Yuri highly unlikely now. As for Jwp perfect fit for our pass sideways and backwards style. Should be great counting how many passes we make before the opposition score! Jwp not for me. And as long as Stephens plays it doesn't matter who we have in goal.

I have been told that Saints are looking long and hard at Sverre Nypan of Rosenberg. The Norwegians want 14 million euros for him. He scored a hatrick last night and is very highly rated.

Saints were saying they needed to sell before they bought. I think you said we probably had 12m to spend.
Since then we have 10m in for Mara, have spent 30m on Archer and Fernandes, potentially 10m lined up on Bijlow and now maybe more.
Sounds like we are very confident on 20m in from ABK and Onuachu to balance the books, KWP or Alcaraz may be off (hope not) or there was more money available than thought.

Preston's line up is all about hitting us on the break. They will not worry about high crosses or low nearpost crosses because not one of our players will be in that position. Corners is the only set play they will worry about but they have enough players whom are very capable in the air.
Why is Fellows on the bench, he turns both ways the same as Scienza which causes defenders real problems.
Downes is not fully fit so give Aribo 60-70 mins, he doesn't give the ball away and he can fill in left side of a back 3.
Can't see us winning, draw at best.

What a fantastic loan signing Middlesboro have made, Nypan might just be the difference between top six or below. Saints are looking for a proper no 10 so why did they miss out?

Tonight's performance was very poor. Our forward line of Brereton Diaz, Downs and Archer were so ineffective that it had me laughing with embarrassment! Armstrong did not improve it but at least Fraser showed more urgency.
Downs has now missed 2 sitters in 2 games. It looks like Stewart is out injured again. poor sod. Where are the goals coming from?
I had hoped the team would be more incisive with Still as manager, its early days but for me not a lot has changed from last season.

BBD and Archer should look a class above against lower L1 opposition but as you say, they were embarrassing.
I don’t see where our 20 goal a season striker is, it’s not Armstrong on the WBA loan showing.

Stewart is our first choice striker imo. I used to really rate Archer but he looks sulky and disinterested since Martin left.
I really rate Robinson but Still must guard him from burnout. I would play 1 tall and 1 mobile forward with a number 10 sat central and just behind them…. Bring on Rudoni ? Midfield 3 of Robinson Downes and Charles with Fraser Smallbone Sesay Edwards as alternatives because I think we will now sell Fernandes ? as we have overpriced Dibling.
2 weeks to go so all could change but we do look toothless in attack.

With your friends inside knowledge do you have any info on transfers in and outs? If you look at the present squad it is pretty much the same as our promotion one, but hopefully with better management and the addition of Charles, Fernandes and possibly Ramsdale.

I have no new info, Ramsdale THB Bednarek Fernandes Charles Downes Archer Edozie have all have clubs sniffing around but nothing concrete that I have been told. Surprisingly there is no noise surrounding Dibling Edwards Sugawara or any other player that I have been told.
My friends have told me that this transfer window, so far, appears to be a cautious one with the obvious exception of the big clubs.
If Saints follow recent years we will see a last minute mad rush which is obviously what no supporter wants to see.

I've been very quiet over the past month, it's time to change that!
What an awful first 45 mins against Eastleigh! Hopefully young Will had enough insight to the squad and its future.
Ramsdale will be sold or a huge loan fee. Bednarek, although on extended leave will be sold, for me a shame. TBH is injured but will be sold, I don't think he's that good a defender in premier league.Manning on extended leave but hopefully RM will buy him for Rangers. Taylor is a really good player, never let us down when played, please keep him. Keep the rest of the defenders as we will need them over the season, Sandi looks quality. Edwards can also play defensive midfield. Keep the midfield and at all cost keep Fernandes and Robinson. Sell Dibling Armstrong Brereton Diaz. Keep Edozie Fraser Archer Stewart . That should add up to balancing the books and, in my humble opinion, leave an extremely competitive squad for 25/26 season.

I wouldn’t be too worried by a July friendly, we had a crap start under Koeman and then had a great season.
Fairly good business so far. It’s funny, looking at our squad I could make a case for selling pretty much everyone, but I don’t think WS will want to be too ruthless.
I expect a keeper in, Ramsdale out. Sugawara, Manning, ABK and THB/Bednarek to go, and a fullback in. We need someone in midfield and Dibling will likely go, hopefully Fernandes stays but feels a long shot.
Given we have such a bloated squad, selling players and saving money for the time being isn’t a bad way to go while WS adjusts to the squad, but looking at it, it looks very championship-ready.
After last season though, expectations are pretty damn low!

I respect your views but personally I think we’re miles away. The season starts soon and nobody has a clue who is staying or who is going.
The names you fear will go, Ramsdale and Fernandes will deplete us to a level which is at best mid table.

I can see us reaching the playoffs.
We have championship goal scorers in Armstrong, Stewart and Archer. Downes, Charles and Fernandes (if stays) would be a formidable midfield and if we find a good centre back pairing with perhaps Patterson in goal, that is a decent defence. Plus some wildcards in Matsuki, Robinson and Downs.
Of course, it depends on who stays, finds form and team spirit. Still has the lads running and we played our best football under Strachan and Pochettinho when fit.
Top 3 on paper but can see Ipswich, Leicester, Birmingham, Sheffield Utd and Coventry ahead of us, with more cohesive teams and experience. That leaves us West Brom, Middlesborough, Wrexham and Norwich to beat for 6th.
My big concern is prem potential. Our subs lost us a lot of points, we need 16 prem level players. Can get 7 at promotion with a 100m and 2 loans (if SR learn lessons) .
Do we have 9 in this squad? I make about 4, 7 at a stretch if some develop and find form. (Quarshie/Edwards, Wellington, Downes/Charles, Fernandes, Robinson, Archer/Stewart and Rambo if loan him) Assuming THB and Dibling go.

Charly is a very talented player but he does lack possession discipline in key areas on the pitch. He will excel at slightly lower standard leagues and in time may well adjust his cavalier style and become an established international and maybe a regular fixture in a top premier league club. Saints don’t have the luxury of giving him time, when playing RMs system he gets caught on the ball too many times which will be punished at the highest level. It is a great shame that, for Charly, RM is manager. If Ralph, Koeman and even Jones were manager he would be playing in a different more explosive style of play which would more suit him.

AA Archer even BBD scored goals when playing with and around a big strong centre forward. Buy a proper number 9, irony is Onaucha was ready made for the championship, play striker off him with Scienza and Robinson wide, Romeu and Charles central, flat back 4 . Then we would see lots of goals. Azaz and Fellows Jander Downes Fraser Aribo as subs/ replacements for injuries.

Edwards Wood Stephens Manning back four. Fellows Charles Downes Scienza midfield four. Choice of Azaz Robinson AA Fraser as front 2 until we recruit a proper centre forward. In January, sell THB, loan out Archer Downs Edozie to try and get them playing to either add value to them or hope they regain some form. Release Aribo.
How well are Smallbone Taylor and Bree doing? Why have they improved beyond recognition? Even BBD is looking a better player.
Board needs to look at the whole mindset of the coaching staff if things do not improve.

Without a proper target man we look toothless! Antonio or Bamford would do a job. What worries me is that we have recruited very good players on previous form but suddenly they have all crashed and burnt! Does this bring into question the club’s recruitment or On field tactics or mindset of the players in the first team squad?
For me the championship is all about winning games, possession means nothing, training ground rotations mean nothing, put the bloody ball in the net!
Still has got 4 games imo.

Very good result against a revitalised Sheffield Utd. Stewart will score lots of goals if kept fit and in the team. My main concern is with the last 10 mins when we went so deep, go for the 3rd then game over please don’t sit back and absorb pressure when it isn’t necessary.
Try Aa Archer and Stewart up top, drop Azaz Downes Charles Centre mid with Fellows right and Manning left 3 centre backs.
