Another reality check!

So after a reasonably sound performance at Stoke (hardly brilliant as RM stated), we mess up again and don`t get an easy 3 points today.

Good start but, as so often, the longer the game goes on the more we lose the initiative. All this possession football is supposed to tire the opposition out but they still looked full of running to me.

First substitutions added very little and inevitable mistake at back is punished. Waste of time (again) bringing on those game changers Mara and Aribo,

Shame we could not swap goalkeepers with Rotherham and as many are saying Manning HAS to go. Give Bree a chance and switch KWP as I suspect a 19 year old Larios if ever fit is not going to solve LB problem. Crying shame Perraud not kept.

Quarter of the season gone. we are 9 points above the bottom 3. we are 11 points behind the top 2.

If we can`t beat Rotherham we will need to look down the table rather than up. Difficult away games coming after international break.

Congratulations to the Saints now 20 league games unbeaten.

HOWEVER as I said on 14th January, we are still lacking the killer touch. Total first half domination but what should have been 4-0 was actually 3-1.

Second half was a nervous watch. Stephens error was shocking. Swansea hitting woodwork twice/Baz superb reactions again. Fine margins - could have been so different. Nearly Norwich again.

Agree Millertime - there are still too many times when playing out from the back is too dangerous.

We must keep KWP and hopefully Adams. Maximise points before visits to Ipswich/Leicester and Leeds which will be decisive.

The record run we are on is incredible and has been a joy to watch.
I definitely think we have added some different play since Calderwood joined.
Not only were we messing around with it at the back, but we were sooooo slow to get the ball forward.

Anyway. loving Adams, Armstrong and Fraser as the front line, with the midfield pushing up. Much more dynamic with Stuey on the pitch.
Loving the over the top balls too, been a long time since we played like that.
Teams are finally scared of us! Players with so many options that poor ol Swansea were not knowing whether to press, tackle or hold off .

But we’ve got to stop giving opponents so many chances! Swansea could have had 4/5 goals . luck, poor finishing and great saves, meant they only scored one.

Stephens a steady defender but not good enough to play the way we do.

Tonight I will be watching . coyr

There is now no doubt that Saints have improved and look good for a play off spot OR EVEN BETTER.

Still nervous until we get a second goal and even then we needed Baz to show again how much he has improved as a shot stopper.

As others have commented :-

1) We need to keep Adams

2) Leicester/Ipswich draw. Both teams lose 2 points

3) So many corners but rarely any end product

4) Shooting practice still required

Really enjoying this current run. COYR!

I still remember well that last time we led all season in the Championship and then got done by Reading at the death. That trophy should have been ours. This time we do the chasing down and we take the glory boys. I want that Lei gap eroded and we go beat them and Ipswich on their own turf and get that title and back to where we belong. COYR

reference my last post - so it looks like I am going to have to go away again!

Since I returned the Saints have again shown in the last 2 games that something still needs fixing.
We should be sat in second place but too many winning positions have ended up as draws.

Total domination and ended up just getting away with it against Plymouth but threw 2 points away at Norwich. Noticed at Norwich that shots on target was 4-2 in our favour with corners 12-1/possession 75% to 25%. Shots 21 to 7.

The differential in on target goal attempts should be far greater. Simply we need a clinical goalscorer (not easy to find with our budget) or we MUST find a way to at least work the opposition goalkeeper

Remains a tendency to concede in the last quarter of a game when we are supposed to have tired out the opposition. Trouble is opponents bring on fresh legs and we get caught out by our own weary mistakes.

KWP has more impact coming from deeper so should not have Stephens at RB. RM stop tinkering and if you don`t want to be `frustrated` with domination but not enough goals suggest in training a little less passing and some more shooting practice.

As predictable as the script of the hundreds of mindless Xmas Movies currently on TV.

RM is the small town guy who is never going to change his ways, happy with his quaint little failing business (aka The Saints).

When is the girl from the big city going to come along and catapult him out of his inertia? And I don`t mean Katherina Liebherr.

Personally not full of festive cheer at present as we fail to put another mediocre team to the sword.

While Leicester and Ipswich win again this midweek we lose another 2 points.

Loads of possession and corners. Yet still the opposition have more goal threat and we could so easily have lost once more. Bet Coventry were worried when we brought on Mara.

Another poor result but no doubt RM will be satisfied. The New Year will soon be here and the league leaders will be far away from us and our fringe players will see us embarrassed as we exit the FA Cup early.

Here`s to 2024.

Did you hear his pre-match interview on radio Solent?

It explained exactly why he got the job. 0 God, can he talk the talk? he sound like he knows what he’s doing? But It was the ramblings of an uneducated man, let alone a technical and tactical genius!

There is a reason this man has not ever improved a team, never even made the playoffs let alone promotion.

He doesn’t have a clue! we are scraping wins and draws!

The football is awful, predictable, boring and the only game plan seems to be to Pass sidewards and backwards!

But still, there are fans that think we are doing well and are playing amazingly?

He is definitely taking our club backwards

2.) 14 Dec 2023 10:45:04
2408, millertime and the rest . come put me out of my misery, come add some sanity .
Why am I being lambasted on social media for criticising Martin and the dross football.
3x the possession
Only one more shot, and one less on target.
Bazuno made some great saves again!
Falling behind the top two more and more .
Goal difference widening .
same ol dross and predictable football

3.) 14 Dec 2023 14:29:19
Why oh why do we keep going for clueless managers. We always seem to go for the cheapest option. We need a manager who knows how to win leagues/ cups etc. Yes it will cost the club more money but we would possibly still be in the Premier league had we invested in someone with knowhow after Ralph. Paying big money for an injured striker who's only played about 20 minutes in a Saints shirt and unlikely to be fit enough to play before February is ok as far as the board are concerned but forking out for a decent manager with a good track record is out of the question? I agree with south_hants_rich this manager is taking us backwards.

4.) 14 Dec 2023 17:29:04
south_hants_rich, teejaysaint, 2408, millertime and others in agreement.

We can`t all be wrong and are basically voicing the opinions of many, many proper Saints Fans. It is unlikely this season is going to end well and next summer will again probably be chaos.

I hesitated from posting after last night because my views are now as predictable as RM’s post match ‘proud of the boys’ and ‘keep believing’ platitudes.

We were dreadful. No ifs, no buts - plain awful.

And we are getting found out. Teams have paid us too much respect and now they realise that we offer no meaningful attacking threat.

I also believe that we will get turned over properly soon by teams who decide to go for it (Sunderland away fashion) .

I agree with the consensus - RM is out of his depth and often out of his mind. Even if we scrape promotion via the play offs I won’t change my mind on him unless he changes his world view on possession.

And if we did manage to go up - playing the way we do - even with additions to the squad - we would get bartered most weeks.

As for the Stewart signing - does anyone remember the time years ago when we wore ‘I’ve seen Charlie George play for Saints’?

6.) 14 Dec 2023 22:27:40
Have to give credit where it is due. Leicester and Ipswich are storming this league and will both hit 110+ points if they carry on like this.

A few games ago they showed weakness and there was a chance us or Leeds could catch them, with our promosing form. Now they have cemented their place bar a radical shift. Fair play to them, Ipswich especially.

We deserve to be where we are. The stats do not lie. We do not have that ruthless edge to be in the top 3 and the manager does not have the desire to change.

Our position and points tally is respectable and better than I expected at this point but we are not PL quality, playing like this.

Maybe Ings will return and give us that edge, who knows? I would have loved the thrill of chasing down the top 2, rather than 25 games waiting for the 3 that will matter but it is what it is.

Maybe we get a good new player, finish the league strongly as RM did last year and beat Leeds in the playoff final, like we did at Saint Mary's. I am in for the ride whether good or bad!

7.) 15 Dec 2023 00:37:58
Agree that Leicester and Ipswich are blazing a trail but we are haemorrhaging points needlessly.

We’re all on the ride but that’s purely because supporting Saints is in our DNA. It’s not fun under RM and the lack of ambition all around the park is unacceptable. Individually and collectively we give the impression that we are big time Charlies. They haven’t earns the right.

There’s not a player in the present side who would have got into the starting eleven under Koeman or Potch (KWP aside) yet they strut around with 5 yard passes back the way they’re facing.

Baz had more touches than every outfield player - what does that say?

Frustrating times and RM will be sacked at some point as all mangers are - hopefully before he does irreparable damage.

I’m thinking 1-1 again Saturday - 3 lack lustre draws on the spin but not to worry, RM will still be very proud of the boys!

8.) 15 Dec 2023 07:41:54
We are in for the ride. Would rather it was driving along a coastal road in a Ferrari than stop, start in traffic with an old Fiat 500!

Would love to know where we would be with an attacking manager and Tella and Sulemana running at pace with Onuachu in the box.

Still, we have come a long way since those 4 defeats, we are unbeaten, better at the back and just need to find a way to score more and see off games. Then maybe we can finish well and pull off a playoff party. Maybe a strong character like Ings can help adjust our play.

At times, our football is brilliant but too often dull and predictable. Charlie, Che and Suelemana should be scoring more at this level, the style of play does not suit them.

We are going to lose a few good players if we fail to get promoted. Burnley will probably win the league next year, but we should have a decent chance against the rest.

09 Dec 2023 18:13:00
Today Leicester 4-0, Ipswich 2-0 and Leeds 2-0.

Meanwhile we again drop points. Probably didn`t deserve to win although at 96 minutes we should have, but our luck ran out.

Rotherham, Huddersfield and now Watford. All missing 2nd/3rd goals.

As has been said recently, this is our best chance of promotion before the squad is decimated, with years of mediocrity to follow.

Still too much tippy tappy and not enough attempts on goal. Watford were better in ALL stats apart from possession. We have had our share of luck and more.

Sadly we are looking at fourth place at best with no hope of closing the gap on those above.

No doubt RM will be `proud` of his team. Yes, they are an honest bunch but as long as we persist with the same methods we will achieve the same results. We must find a way of turning leads into wins more often.

St Michael

1.) 09 Dec 2023 19:10:43
Hugely greater possession, almost half the shots Watford had.
And still RM says and no point weren’t we in control of the game . i beg to differ!
And as per my previous stats, another game where we weren’t leading by more than one goal .
And we got found out …

2.) 09 Dec 2023 19:47:39
Well that was underwhelming … just got back and feel short changed by yet another one step forward two steps back performance.

I don’t think we managed a shot on or off target in the first half. Total lack of ambition and to be honest, we are a bore to watch.

As mentioned by others, proper teams look to score goals…. we get free kicks 30 yards out and rather than having a punt, we play the ball back via 3 players to our keeper.

Shout out for Baz though - he’s gaining confidence and was probably the main reason why we got a point.

3.) 09 Dec 2023 20:50:33
Millertime . but still Martin says we controlled the game and we’re unlucky?
We had half the shots of Watford in almost double the possession ….
Surely, one of the coaches is saying, excuse me, Mr Martin, but no we are not playing as well as you think we are…
Someone soon is going to give us a hiding

4.) 10 Dec 2023 13:19:49
His arrogance will bring about his own downfall.

The tide is turning - we were the two that scored late goals and now we’re conceding them.

Coventry away - unlucky 13 or can we find a performance that gets us off our seats?

5.) 10 Dec 2023 18:22:41
We may well find a performance that gets us off our seats, but it will be for a very short period of the game. If we score early then you can forget entertaining football.
Mr possession obsession football doesn’t have a clue what it takes go get promotion . because he’s never achieved a play off spot, let alone promotion!
It wouldn’t be so bad if the football was entertaining, but it’s not… it’s awful and predictable

Well. Last posted after the Coventry game and was still not entirely happy.
I go away. Miss 3 games. What has happened?
Brilliant results. Goal difference improves by 10. Even Mara scores.
Top 2 not so far away.

Well done Saints. Feeling much more positive suddenly for 2024

Agree. RM is clearly deluded and stubborn.

Definition of madness - keep on doing the same thing but expect a different outcome. He has to go next international break. Graham Potter please come here not Everton?

Would love to see us in training. Surely Martin must have seen AA/Fraser and Sulemana running at Bernard Manning and fellow comedians. Oh sorry forgot Manning wouldn`t be anywhere near the LB berth. And probably the forwards would not trouble Baz with a shot on target. It`s only opposition forwards who continually trouble him with goalbound efforts.
