Just seen that JWP not in the England 26 but players like Henderson who have not played for months are in, also Danny Ings did not even make the 33 man squad what on earth is the England manager thinking, he said all along he would pick players who were fit and on form, how he justifies this selection is beyond belief, no wonder England have not won anything since 1966 and we even needed home advantage and a Dodgy linesman to get that one done. The fact that Matt Letiss has so few caps says it all.

I agree with you Norfolk Saint about Ings - it’s a travesty he didn’t get the nod and yes it does open up old wounds about Le Tis who would have walked into any other international side including Brazil, Argentina, Italy you name it.
But, and it’s a big but, I think you’re looking at JWP through Saints tinted glasses. I agree it’s a joke giving Henderson a place but JWP would not get in my squad either. He would only just get a place in my Saints side to be honest. Take his dead ball ability away and he’s ordinary. He contributes nothing in the last third - I cannot remember him taking a player on and beating him. Take David Beckham as an example of a dead ball specialist - he could do everything JWP does with a free kick and could change the game in open play. It maybe an unfair comparison but I would pick Mount and Grealish in front of JWP all day long.
Ings though is a different argument and as I would have him as cover for Kane at the very least - England need an impact sub and Southgate was mad to overlook him.

2.) 03 Jun 2021 13:32:08
Ings is the more like for like Kane replacement. After he went off vs Austria, we went a bit long ball trying to hit Calvert-Lewis. Danny drops deep just like Kane and allows the other 2 forward players space (as in our goal) . Crazy decision.

3.) 03 Jun 2021 17:48:06
Ings, on his day, is better than DCL, Bamford who have had excellent seasons. I am shocked he wasn’t in the 33. Given the size of the squads, I maybe would’ve kept JWP in just for that off chance where we get a free kick in the 84th minute of the Quarter-Finals from 24 yards out. He’s the best in the country in that situation and given there are four right backs, I think one could be dropped for him on that off chance he could save the day.

Totally agree with saintGgsy PEH said that he wanted to move to play champions league and the only two clubs who have shown in an interest are nowhere near that level, the fact that the big six clubs have shown no interest says it all . Great to have JWP captaining the team Southampton through and through, probably only until someone offers 30 million or more then the club will sell him as well.

But that's the club's business model, to buy talent; nurture it and then sell for a profit - It's been well documented.

I have just seen saints kit for next season, personally I don't like it, Saints should always be red and white striped shirts, tradition is there for a reason. what do others make of it.

Norfolk Saint

{Ed002's Note - The Press Release implies it is an anniversary kit reflecting the kit from when the club was founded.}

1.) 08 Jul 2020 14:47:14
Anniversary kit would be our third strip, which I love, similar to 2010/ 11 season.

First kit reminds me of Middlesbrough when they were in the PL in 2017, bit tacky, but better than the ‘bra’ phase we’ve been going through of late. Bring back 2014-16 strips, I loved those. Sponsor also isn’t really in keeping with our colours being the massive ugly shape it is.

2.) 08 Jul 2020 17:59:59
I like it, only so much you can do with stripes ever year. Traditionally we’re red and white (with a little black) but fairly often we’ve changed it up, 1989 was the only year of the 80’s we had a striped shirt and 15 years out of the last 40 have been something other than stripes (17 if you count the Pony tick shirt)

Away shirt will be same as the third just black instead of white btw.

3.) 08 Jul 2020 22:22:08
I really like it, as someone who tries to buy at least the home and away shirts as a way to support the club every season, it’s nice to have something other than red and white stripes in the wardrobe.

Something a little different every third or fourth season is fine by me.

As a business move it is probably quite savvy by the club to try to invigorate sales, instead of people not wanting the new kit if it was just another red and white stripe kit that many fans already have.

So it may boost sales this season and next when they will invariably return back to the favored stripes.

{Ed047's Note - I just had a look, really quite like it, nice kit.

What a great result today, fantastic performance and full marks to every player probably the best effort for years and hopefully the we can't win at home is now behind us great to see Adams get his goal which should now free him up to score many more for the saints. l hav previously been critical of walker peters but obviously Ralph knows a player when he sees one so maybe a deal can be done with spurs. looking forward now to next season and hopefully we can have a season pushing towards the European places rather than the battle at the wrong end of the table.

I am not surprised that saints don't win so many at home as we don't seem to be able to dominate teams like we use too, those older fans like myself will well remember the Dell roar which seemed to really galvanize the team, fans pay there money and have every right to criticize, although we should always remember that we are all on the same side and as long as every player is giving 100% they can do no more . we should also note that errors must be allowed for as we enjoy the mistakes that others make.

Well NS I'm not surprised either, although I suggest it is the lack of atmosphere at St Mary's, coupled with the (apparently) acceptable bad habit of some of supporters booing/ heckling our own players. I'm sure that if everyone sang, cheered and supported the lads - we'd be 5 places higher up the table!

No way do we need Eddie Howe why would we want a Bournemouth reject, I would sooner try to attract either potter from Brighton or Parker from Fulham.

Norfolk Saint

{Ed014's Note - don’t blame you, Eddie Howe is useless

Brilliant analysis by saintggsy I agree with most of what he says but I am most alarmed by an article from Ralph saying he is sticking with our two goalkeepers and will rotate them next season this doesn't work for two reasons firstly maccarthy is a liability and secondly the team needs a settled back five to build confidence on each other.

Well at last the season is over, to say it was disappointing would be an understatement, what started so promisingly fell away alarmingly and the leader who had looked so strong showed poor judgement not only in team selection but also in some truly bizarre substitutions .

Very few players came out of the season with there reputations enhanced, only JWP and JWP performed regularly to the standard required, some other like Ings, Armstrong and Romeau were seemingly near to the standard others have seemed to go backwards I would put Redmond Bertrand and Djenrpo in that category .

It now seems imperative that we have a true sort out this summer whether that includes a change of management is unclear but judging on the 2021 results unless Ralph gets off to a flying start next season we will surely find ourselves very much involved at the wrong end of the table.

Norfolk Saint

1.) 24 May 2021 19:36:55
Redmond : what more does he have to do to get dropped, not to the bench, but completely?
I was watching saints a few games ago and the commentator was enthusing over how wonderful Redmond is? He is awful in every department, he is not a team player, poor shooter, poor passer, poor tackler, poor at tracking back . it Ralph continues to pick him!

Redmond and Djenepo break up so many of our own attacks is terrible. Very rarely do we attack at pace, because as soon as one of these gets the ball, it’s a stop, step over, look around . pass back! ’

JWP . needs to get back into a more forward role running the midfield, not running the central defence!

We need to be growing as have many lower end/ mid table teams. Playing much more fluently, faster and skilfully.
It may more that we have stood still, while the PL quality is improving around us.

If we don’t want to drop and drop then players like Redmond and Djenepo must be moved on.

Totally agree we need to sign not one but two goalkeepers also without Ings we lack finishing at the top level. how many times do we hear that we have played well and yet can't even get a point, Liverpool were not that great tonight but still good enough to beat us, where do we go from here? Is Ralph still the answer or just part of the problem.

Well done tonight to get a point after a harsh sending off speaks volumes. I think all older fans must be wondering if you can actually make a tackle without risking a red card, it seems to me that maybe instead of having referees judging the VAR incidents we could have ex players or people who know exactly what it is like to be in the situation.

Norfolk Saint

1.) 30 Apr 2021 23:16:03
Ex players doing VAR - top shout that so long as they don't officiate on former clubs.

According to the press Josh Sims is back and training with the saints not sure however if he is in our premiership squad, could be an option if he is.
