People keep banging on about JWP being a one club man and captain of the side. Personally I don't see him as being either because his all round game is far from complete. Great crosser of the ball agreed but great midfield players have to be tough and reliable. Watched the under 21 match last night and he was challenged for the ball on at least 6 occasions and lost possession. Not strong enough and another of our top midfielders who couldn't score if the goal was 3 times as wide. If he is this future star why is he one of our only players who is not being touted by all the other clubs. We need a midfield with strength and steel and if we can get that the forwards will be freed up more . Keeping the ball in midfield is the name of the game and that has been our downfall over the last season and probably why we have conceded so many counter attacking goals. JWP is a good player but to me not good enough if we want to push forward as a club.

I don't understand how a player who has been at the same club since the age of eight and never expressed any desire to leave can be called anything other than a one-club man. How can a player who has represented his country at U17, U19, U20, U21 and full international levels not be in the discussion for the club captaincy?

Never said he couldn't be considered for the captaincy but until Puel came along he was more or less a bench warmer. If Pellegrino decides he wants a midfielder with strength on the ball similar to Dembele I'm afraid JWP will be back on the bench. You don't have your captain on the bench, you just don't. Only one player fits the bill and that is VVD if Steve Davis is supposedly losing his edge which I don't think he is. If we want to be progressive and push on we must keep VVD if at all possible, might cost us a bit but the potential benefits are massive.

JWP is only 21 - he will toughen up and fill out over the next 12 to 24 months - he is gaining masses of experience and when he is 24 / 25 if he signs his next contract he could be captain - but he needs to be a leader on the pitch - some players lead you during a game - make you play better - try harder - i was never a captain because i was always in my own head when playing - captains play outside themselves and make others react to them. that's what makes a captain - a player who can make others players better during the game.

Good things in JWP book
Is set pieces
And to be fair we haven't had a target man
But JWP has not been consistent since poch left.
