No nothing that famed black box is great at finding gems BUT it's the actual signing of them that's the hard bit.

I don't know much about that, but a box somewhere has a contract in it signed by Shane long. I like that box.

The recent Echo article made depressing reading. We wanna be excited and get behind the team, but come on 3 years in a row where net spending has been basically nothing, or less then nothing!
Getting rediculous. I know there are bonuses, and signing on fees, and we've been doing a great job with signing existing players on to long contracts. But this summer we have accrued somthing like 65 mill from player sales. We have spent 22 mill. And what about the millions in TV money coming in? And now the echo says we are after just a substitute gk and a substitute rb. Maybe an attacking player, just maybe. Well hopefully the article isn't 100% correct, because if it is it's going to be very hard to take us seriously in my view.
Sell Pelle, Mane and even Juanmi, and replace with one unproven player, Redmond. What if Austin and Jrod have injuries? And at centre back? When Yoshida plays we don't win, and Gardos is another seemngly injured player. Plus we have europa league this season. Are we building a squad that could have even a sniff of qetting to europa league quarter - finals and finishing top 4 in premier league? Doesn't look like it.
Well I hope the article is wrong and I'm getting my knickers in a twist for no reason.
We need a good promising cb for about 10 mill. Obviously the rb and gk cover players. And definitely a marquee signing attacking player, Bouffal, Tello, Berahino, Musa (too late), whatever, 20 mill something like that.
Over the last 2 summers we must be the team who have spent the lowest net amount in transfer fees. 2 summers ago we spent a lot less than we got in, last summer I think we actually spent about 12 million more than wwe recieved (small mercies! ) So this season can we please actually spend some money! I know you shouldn't just throw money away like so many teams do. In many ways I love the way Saints are run, and I really wanna get excited about the new season, but come on we need at least 4 new players, and we should be spending AT LEAST another 30 mill this summer. We could be on the verge of something great. Or we could just be a cashcow.

So not spending ALL the money we recieve by selling players on new players constitutes as "depressing", despite finishing higher than the season before for the last 3 seasons with that method?
Just because we don't sign a player for 20 million right after we sold one for that same amount doesn't mean the board isn't ambitious or competent. We sold Lallana for over 25 million and signed mane for 10 (after that selling him for almost quadruple that price) . I mean I get it if you're frustrated when this method isn't working but nothing has gone wrong, has it? Didn't see you complaining about mane and tadic who were cheaper than lallana, or vvd and bertrand who are both cheaper than shaw and lovren.

Reading another write up on the echo story and they put it out there that as koeman and our old head of scouting at spuds have pretty much all the info on players we are monitoring, then saying we're only getting back ups is fluid under the radar until we want to do the deal. Also you have to remember we have none of last seasons first team coaching staff left to discuss with puel what is needed. This trip to Holland will give him a better idea of where we are lacking in substance and if we need more signings. Which I'm sure funds will be made available for. No point buying over inflated costing players so soon after the euros and getting into bidding wars.

Slowly slowy catchy monkey.

I agree with a lot of your points. I still feel we are 4 players short of a great squad however. And it would be nice for us to spend a bit of money at least 1 season out of 3, especially when you consider the astronomical tv deals!
Seeing how well we are doing as cheapskates, imagine how well we might do if we actually splashed out a bit!
Anyway as I alluded to earlier, hopefully the article is a bit of a smokescreen, you don't want the whole world to know your transfer plans after all, weakens your bargaining position.
Definitely stand by what I said, 4 new players, 30 mill minimum spend, 2 back up defenders, 1 back up keeper, and a marquee signing attacking player. Give the fans and the whole team a bit of a lift. To be fair we probably will do just that. I hope.

I just cannot get disappointed, unhappy or frustrated that our club is so well run. Nor that our recruitment is second to none, resulting in us finding quality players for less than their true value and improving them and/ or allowing them to flourish so that we achieve significantly more than their true value. This will always result in us having a low or negative net spend.

I’m also a bit sick of hearing things like “we need to spend £x on a player, ” or “we need to make a marque signing. ” We don’t and we won’t (I strongly suspect) . We need to continue what we’ve been doing. There are always quality players out there available for relatively low transfer fees, you just have to find them, and we’re extremely good at that.

As for saying Redmond is an unproven player is a bit laughable. He was one of the stand out performers at the Toulon tournament, and has been one of the most notable English youngsters coming through the ranks over the last few years. I understand that it was “only” Norwich, but he was playing the Premiership at 19. That should tell you that he is at the very least an excellent prospect, if not an already established premier league player.

I would also like us to sign perhaps two more players, but not gamble huge amounts on them. We have a very good squad already, which just needs enhancing, definitely not overhauled.

Finally, we ARE on the verge of something great. It’s a great time to be a Saints fan, and I’m enjoying it. COYR.

Blimey I'm glad that some people out there are not in charge of my finances. Keep taking the water out of the well etc., comes to mind. I've said it before and I will say it again that we will NEVER be in the same financial position of Arsenal, Chelsea, Man City, Man Utd, Liverpool and Spurs. We will NEVER have attendances regularly over 40,000. We will never have massive sponsorship monies like the top 6. No disrespect to any saints supporters but if you believe that we will then I feel sorry for you. I've followed Saints for many years and I've never experienced any thing like the last few years. To lose players and still finish 8th,7th and 6th and qualified for Europe is just truly amazing. We now have another manager who has bags of potential to guide us to better things is again amazing. We have the squad (with at 2 more to come in) and a very solid boardroom. Come on out there have faith and get behind the team come the first match with Watford. COYR's and We will march on.

Welshgirl correction and a pedantic point it was 14th, 7th and then 6th, but yes progression and good times

Agree also we need to invest to replace those who have gone and add more depth for a good run in europe and also making a serious attempt of equalling last season in the EPL.

13.) 22 Jul 2016
22 Jul 2016 16:50:20
Welshgirl, apologies I missed a year - god where has time gone
14th, 8th, 7th and 6th, same though progression - it'll be nice to sustain this trend - and suppose others are saying to do this we need to bring in more players.

To be honest I meant to put 14th in but entirely agree with WillsaSaint about depth of squad for the new season ahead especially with Europe as well. Let the big clubs that throw money about like Monopoly money then step in and get good replacements a good additions as well if needed. Thank god Lowe and Cortese have gone. I for one would love good runs in Europe, F. A. Cup, League Cup and the JPT. I would suggest using some of the academy, fringe players and reserves for the League Cup and JPT. The strongest sides for Europe and F. A. Cup I reckon should be used. Thanks for your comments MilkySaint but I would accept any criticism from anybody as this is what this is all about. Rumours have it that we are looking at Darren Randolph the Irish GK that played in the Euros . Would West Ham let him go and would he play 2nd fiddle to Forster? Onwards and Upwards. Have a good weekend lads and girls. COYR's.

We have done really well in previous seasons buying cheap then selling for a massive profit but is it a gamble we want to take every season we are on the verge of something big why play safe every year why don't we just go for it it is great that we are tying up are best on long term contracts and I understand that that is where most of the TV money is going but those higher wages will not garentee loyalty we need a much larger squad if we want to seriously want to compete with the so called big boys who are running scared and trying to buy the league like they have in the past.

Leicester. Call it a fluke.

Yest was a fluke even they are almost buying a whole new team so that they can compete on the same level this season they are not afraid to spend they have ambition and want to stay on top maybe our board should show some.
