Reports that we are favourites to sign Alex Song. Be interesting to see if this develops but would indicate Morgan moving on (very likely IMO) and Clasie not happening. Could be worse!

Saintsteve

1.) 07 Jun 2015 16:34:39
I think Clasie was supposed to be coming in regardless of whether Schniederlin went or not, hopefully we'll get both, definitely have one of the best midfields in the prem then

2.) 07 Jun 2015 17:31:07
I heard that Clasie deal is not going to happen

3.) 07 Jun 2015 19:35:02
I think we need another prolific goal scorer, maybe Austin. Pelle is good but he needs the delivery and doesn't quite get the same delivery from mane as he gets from tadic and long. Be nice to see alderweireld on permanently, a goal keeper think that steklenberg would be good. High profile centre mid like song would be quality. I know Barton can be a lose cannon but there is no denying his talent

4.) 07 Jun 2015 20:02:20
Would love to see Alex Song come in, could picture him and Wanyama being a formidable force in the middle. Although I reckon Song plays much better in a flat 3 in the middle. But with Pelle, Long, Mane and Jay Rod I feel we have enough goals in the team and if a striker is signed it will be for competition only. Think a goal keeper and a centre back (if Toby doesn't sign) is essential

5.) 07 Jun 2015 22:08:22
I don't think we can rely on just Long, Pelle, Rodriguez and Mane for goals, especially if we're hoping to go beyond the group stages of the Europa League. Pelle only signed a three year deal will us and I suspect there won't be an extension, more so because he may want to go back to Italy rather than Saints not offering one. Therefore we need another striker on the books this season, rather than next summer when we may find ourselves selling him.

6.) 07 Jun 2015 19:32:25
That Song rumour has certainly picked up speed out of nowhere! Eds, do you know anything about it? Would song be in stead of Clasie? I saw one of you guys saying that interest had ended in him

{Ed002's Note - West Ham would really like to do a deal for Song in the summer. However, there are three factors that will be critical in Song's decision about where he moves next: (a) the asking price, (b) wages of £100k plus a week, and (c) what other clubs are interested in him beyond WHU. It is too far off to really say at this time but the wages may be too high for WHU. Certainly Inter Milan have spoken with Barcelona about the player - which has sparked a thought that he could be loaned to Inter until January and then be used as part of an exchange for Kovacic. He is also seen as an option by Southampton and Manchester City.}

7.) 08 Jun 2015 07:44:35
I like Song as a player when he wants to play but I think he has a bit of an attitude problem and I don't think that Saints would be willing to meet his £100K wages. If they did it could destabilise the rest of the team.

8.) 08 Jun 2015 12:51:26
All in all saints need to tie any deals up quick we ain't got time to dilly-dally and penny pinch epically what Europe starting in July

9.) 08 Jun 2015 21:38:49
I highly doubt Pelle will want to return to Italy? He hasn't played there since 2011 so I think he's used to not living there. I agree I would like to see a forward come in, but a keeper and a centre back are clearly essentials.

03 Jun 2015 02:34:35
Media reports of 'advanced talks' for Maarten Stekelenburg who is available on a free transfer. If true (who knows!), I think this could be a great signing.

Saintsteve

1.) 03 Jun 2015 11:58:51
I thought he was still in contract to Fulham.

2.) 03 Jun 2015 12:40:37
Looks like your right. That will teach me to take things at face value from the media! (I should have known better)

3.) 03 Jun 2015 21:10:44
He's the Eljero Elia of goalkeepers. Started in the 2010 world cup final, but has been absolute garbage ever since and his career has faded away into irrelevance.

Personally, I'd be worried about Saints taking such a huge gamble for such a key position. It didn't matter so much that Elia turned out to be rubbish, as he was only a squad player and worth a punt. But if your new number one continues down his four-year path of total decline, then you've got a big problem.

I understand the appeal of a cheap, once-good international keeper who his club are desperate to get rid of, but it seems risky to me, when there's no need to take such a gamble. There are other decent keepers out there, whose careers are on the rise not the downslope.

4.) 04 Jun 2015 10:14:03
The thing is the only want cover till frazer gets back cause he will only want his position back and too much money to leave on the bench.

5.) 04 Jun 2015 13:57:51
Steklenberg is a great keeper who got conned into moving to Fulham when put together a very good side I'd have him here as a number one let alone a number two he's played in Europe almost his whole career with Ajax and the Dutch national team ,Forster will be great one day but let's be honest if he hadn't played in the spl he wouldn't have had a sniff of Europe

6.) 04 Jun 2015 19:01:21
Stekelenburg didn't get conned into joining Fulham. He bombed out at Roma, where he was exceptionally poor, had a number of injuries and ultimately lost his place.

Fulham threw him a lifeline - and he was a disaster from the beginning, injuring himself on his debut. When he returned, he conceded more than 2.25 goals per game, and was dropped for the last nine matches of the season in favour the mighty David Stockdale. Hasn't played for them since.

Loaned out to Monaco, he's sat on the bench all of this season just gone.

His stock has virtually evaporated since he left Ajax in 2011. He's not a "great keeper". Not anymore. Not even close. And like I said before, I think it's a massive gamble for Saints to sign him as their number one for the new season and cross their fingers that he can somehow rewind the clock five years to when he wasn't hopeless. Can't they do better, with someone who is actually relevant in the here and now?

7.) Haha quality wpedia analysis of a goalkeeper who's had a much better career than any goalkeeper except Peter Shilton the saints have ever had. he played over 50 games in Rome I think hardly a bad record since he was there about a season and a half oh and he was also playing champions league there aswell, if you want shit goalkeepers look no further than davis and gazza for Christmas sake hardly a risk signing a goalkeeper who's played in a world cup final for the DUTCH when they are your other options, have a big wipe and move on

8.) 05 Jun 2015 16:59:30
Had being the operative word. He hasn't been worth his salt as a keeper since he left Ajax. Hasn't played for Holland in three years.

I've no argument that he used to be a very good keeper, but sadly he isn't anymore and hasn't been for a number of years now. Signing declining players who used to be good but now their Championship club are desperate to get them off the books isn't a great transfer strategy, IMHO.

New 5 year contract for Prowsey being reported, which would be a great move. Not up on the official site.

Saintsteve

1.) 30 Jan 2015 10:38:16
He can't shoot straight. He can't tackle. He gets dispossessed extremely easily.
He gets brushed off the ball with fingertip control. He is extremely slow. He never ever wins a header. He is an expert at passing the ball sidewaye or backwards.
What's not to like!!

2.) 30 Jan 2015 10:44:06
Now official. Good lad Prowsey.

3.) @larry1 He can't shoot straight? He passes the ball backwards & sideways? I don't think you've ever seen him play. We don't call him the sniper for nothing.

4.) 30 Jan 2015 13:08:16
larry1 are you talking about JWP or cork? sounds like the latter

5.) 30 Jan 2015 13:46:50
He has the second highest assists to minutes played in the league. What's not to like you ask?

6.) 30 Jan 2015 14:52:24
He has a point. JWP can last about 65/70 mins before he is out of fitness, he is not fast or strong. His set pieces is a valuable asset and especially when wanyama is playing to compensate for JWP's weaknesses. But he does need to improve his game a lot, get more physical and increase his stamina

7.) 30 Jan 2015 17:38:11
Blimey larry1 JWP has had rave reviews from not only Hodgson, top football critics and Koeman but again another academy product who has a great future ahead of him. Are you sure you're watching the same person ? Anyway Cork has obviously lost the plot -I could understand him going to a top team but Swansea? Wonder if Koeman has lined up a replacement yet ? 3pts Sunday COYR's

8.) 30 Jan 2015 22:35:34
J-w-p has the ability to be a huge player for the saint not just short, medium but now even long term and yet people are here slagging him, WHY? Do we want the up and coming to stay and improve with us or jump ship. I'm lost for why some people would even start to slag him wow very short sighted people on here.
As with all players improvements can be made but let them make them, whilst doing so mistakes will be made but that's what makes the saints system work we let the players grow so people who are on his back BACK OFF.
He his the saints future and personally I'm a MASSIVE FAN

9.) 30 Jan 2015 23:26:07
I think everyone can see how good a prospect he is, with his passing, corners and set pieces being a huge strength of his, but you must be able to see his weaknesses too (strength, stamina, pace) but he is still young and now he is with us for 5 more years, he has is at the best club to learn these traits, imagine JWP with more pace and strength, would be an incredible player!

10.) 31 Jan 2015 11:48:05
Not sure you've seen many games this season larry. Pleased with the support of everyone else for JWP. He has a ;ong way to go but the lad is 20 years old. Look how far he has come in the last few seasons. He came in a fragile weak youngster who often lost the ball but had a great delivery. He has since bulked up a lot, developed so much more composure and is a regular starter. He is the one player in the team who can place the ball exactly where he wants it nearly every time. He has been in the England youth set up for years, playing one of the most demanding roles in football and did i mention HE IS ONLY 20. Yeah he has to a long way to go but he has the potential to be one of the top talents in English football. He provides vital assists. Sets up attacks and works hard for the team. To keep him on a long term contract is fantastic news for the saints. Mates who support liverpool, man city and arsenal have all raved about him and he has rave reviews from most pundits in the country. As for passing backwards and sideways. We play a high possession, attacking style of football which requires keeping the ball and being patient to find space to work in, so you could argue most of our team do this. He also play neat through balls and has the ability to place a ball directly at team mates feet. What is not to like. Future england started and i for one am over the moon he has committed his next few years to Saints. He is a really down to earth intelligent lad with a great head for football. Can see him becoming a Saints hero.

11.) 31 Jan 2015 13:47:22
No one should be getting on top of our players, especially those we have produced ourselves. Everyone has weaknesses and JWP is at the best club to improve on them and become a great player here.

12.) 31 Jan 2015 21:38:42
Even Koeman has stated JWP needs improvement but also highlighted how he is eager, patient and willing to improve himself as much as possible for the sake of the team. You can't expect him to be pirlo just yet.

Is anyone able to shed light on the Juanmi situation? Media have ramped that up recently

Saintsteve

1.) 15 Jun 2015 14:41:51
Supposedly having a medical this week. £5m looks like a worthy gamble on a Spanish international

2.) 15 Jun 2015 15:54:11
Supposedly having a medical today. Looks a complete steal if the 5 mil fee is correct. Malaga fans ain't happy about it either

3.) 15 Jun 2015 20:18:55
Yeah sounds good, read a report saying he could be the new Marian pahars style player.could be a very good signing.

4.) 15 Jun 2015 21:52:57
I'd go along with you there. Right age, fast and a good prospect. Roko will make him into a much better player at SFC.

I be happy now if we can get a keeper in on a years loan and keep Clyne.
Clyne's international future would be better served at SFC than LFC or Manchester United . He would only go the way of Luke Shaw.

Im not convinced he will walk in to the starting lineup, but its a very decent punt for the fee. Young player that adds some much needed depth. Today is a good day! (So far. )

St Christopher - Gaston is from Uruguay mate.

Saintsteve

{Ed007's Note - But he came to Southampton via Bolgna, in Italy, and he has been linked with a move back to Italy.}

Personally I think it will be United Dave. In his own words, he wants to stay in England and play CL football. Arsenal could yet come back in for him but media are suggesting they have turned attention elsewhere, possibly due to fee required.

United are the most likely to snap him up and arguably need a player like him in the centre. In my opinion he is one of the league's best.

Its reported that Tottenham have recently enquired, which would be an odd move for Morgan as it wouldn't be the step forward to CL. but money often talks!

I get the sense that some fans wouldn't be happy unless KL wrote the club a blank cheque.

My bad Jof! Took you as serious on that one. If you had included the fact that we now can't resign Guly my humour radar would have been all over it!

Meltdown?? No.

Its great to be link with the calibre of both players but you have to look at this realistically. Both will get higher wages elsewhere and would attract attention from a host of Champions League clubs (certainly Odegaard has). The reality is we would struggle to compete to sign them.

FYI - there should be some Sky Sport coverage later today and hopefully some additional article from a well known website too.

Considering he is nearly running the equivalent of two marathons a day, consecutively for three weeks is INSANE. 1000 miles. Even crazier when you consider the lack of coverage.

For anyone who hasn't donated please do. Fran and Cancer Research deserve it.
