Southampton FC have matched the €17 Million valuation of Lazio's Wesley Hoedt.

Player is pushing for the move; expect a medical before Gameweek 2 and an official announcement sometime after the West Ham game.

Wesley Hoedt is a Dutch International centre-back of whom is very good friends with Virgil Van Dijk through the national team set-up. Can't help but think this may be a way of easing tensions between VVD and the Board while also filling the void left by José Fonte in January.

This could see us looking to shift Gardos on as he is the epitome of first team dead-wood. Only stumbling block could be that he is very much liked all around the club.

1.) 16 Aug 2017 16:42:32
Wesley Hoedt and Mauricio Lemos both looked at.

Also expecting a Winger/ attacking midfielder to be added before the transfer window shuts. First choice earlier in the window was Jacob Murphy who was heading to Saints before Newcastle increased there offer.

2.) 16 Aug 2017 17:36:59
If Murphy honestly chose Newcastle ahead of saints 1 we wouldn't want him 2. His advisors should be sectioned.
Harris has been so unlucky with injury and looked good before then. Hoedt comes in can see VVD going as can't see us keeping 5 cb's. We need to start boufal and if he comes good don't need a winger it's hard when u have part game time as the pressure is on to do something quickly. He needs a run and tadic needs to be told to pick up or move on. Although to be fair no surprise his game has gone down without pelle as a target/ hold up man.

3.) 17 Aug 2017 10:08:57
Murphy is a Newcastle fan. Lemos would be class, would be another defender that can take a decent free kick!

4.) 21 Aug 2017 02:29:55
Don't think there was any pushing involved. Lazio set a price and Saints have seemingly matched it.

Fee agreed with Anderlecht for "young, Belgian midfielder". Player is unnamed but expected to be either Dennis Praet or Youri Tielemans. Agent is already in England to finalise negotiations - announcement if successful can be expected by the weekend or early next week.

SaintMobius

1.) 27 Jul 2016 08:42:20
It's apparently Samuel Bastien. 19yr old 3m.

2.) 27 Jul 2016 12:51:08
Seems pretty decent from from what I've heard from Anderlecht fans. Plays similar to Højbjerg so we can assume that Puel wants to build a very technically versatile midfield which means lots of attractive football to come!

I may have jumped the gun on the Tielemans or Praet link but I was just going off of previous interest from us.

3.) 27 Jul 2016 13:01:40
I would love it if we signed Tieleman - save me buying him on football manager. I have seen him play a few games on TV and he looks very technical and highly rated on FM scouting database Sky are using.

4.) 27 Jul 2016 16:17:32
Isn't this the same guy Liverpool were linked with a few months ago?

5.) 27 Jul 2016 17:26:20
Anderlecht have been trying to offload him for ages. I hope it's nothing more than his agent trying to talk up the price for someone else.

{Ed002's Note - Anderlecht are keen to hold on to Samuel Bastien who has been on loan to Avellino but are aware of interest from a number of sides including Pescara, Southampton and Genoa. Interest of Liverpool (Rodgers was keen on a deal right from the start of last the season on the basis of youth scouting reports), PSV, Lille, Juventus and Fiorentina has gone.}

Keep an eye on Robbie Brady this summer, I believe his performances were watched by Southampton representatives at the Euro's mainly keeping an eye on Shane Long and his recurring knee injury.

Plays in a position that we potentially need strengthening and would provide that wide defensive overlap that Bertrand has been caught out with when he pushes upfield over the last few seasons.

Any input on this Ed's? Just piecing together from what I've read from Footy Journo's and some news sites.

They want 20m!

03 Jul 2016 13:44:41
So if Pellé does become subject to bids after his Euro 2016 performance and the club does decide to sell him, who would Puel go for?

Alassane Pléa is a young striker who Puel signed at Nice during his last season there, bagging 9 goals in 52 appearances in his first full season as a starting XI striker. Not a bad record considering what Shane Long's record was like before we signed him from Hull!

Another player could be Sebastien Haller, another young French striker who's impressed for FC Utrecht, bagging 19 goals in 35 appearances for them. This is probably the most likely signing, considering Southampton's scouting being well and truly stuck in in the Eredivisie and Puel could be looking to bring fellow countrymen in to make communication with the squad a little bit easier.

SaintMobius

1.) 03 Jul 2016 15:53:22
I'd rather just promote one/ both of Sam Gallagher/ Ryan Seager.

2.) 03 Jul 2016 16:15:33
9 in 52? I'd leave well alone.

3.) 03 Jul 2016 16:30:27
Apparently it was agreed that wanyama, mane and pelle would be sold before koeman bailed to Everton. I remember seeing on here last year that we were linked with haller so could be something in it.

4.) 03 Jul 2016 16:47:16
Agree with JP saint, we need a player that will bag 20+ goals if we want to 'March on'

5.) 03 Jul 2016 19:13:12
WillsaSaint - Every club in the Premiership needs a player that scores 20 goals a year. how many achieved that last year 4-5?

Sam Gallagher will get his chance I'm sure, he played well in my opinion last 6 games of the season in the development squad.

Sebastian Haller looks a sensible bet, I'm sure that if Jay Rodrigues get back to 90% we will be well set, we might need an established player if we thing about Europe, its probably not possible but Sam Vokes would be good, especially if we let Pelle go which is financially the right thing to do, but as long as Shane Long stays (which I hope) and Charlie Austin plus Dusan Tadic we are not to weak.

I think we need a holding midfielder, Steve Davies, might drop back a little but we need another Schniderlin type player and maybe another bit of cover should Fonte or Van Dyke pick up an injury.

We probably need a bit of cover for a goalkeeper, I'm happy for Gazzaniga to be given a fair crack but i'd Forster got injured and we have the European schedule we are too skinny.

All interesting though. looking forward to it, only 6 weeks now. :-)

6.) 03 Jul 2016 22:01:44
Agreed with all the Pléa criticism but he spent most of his season playing LW off the bench, where he was assisting the strikers.

If versatility is what we really need, then someone like Pléa would be a superb young signing, especially under Puel's striking coaching that's already starting to become a huge selling point of his appointment. In the busy European fixtures, having Plea available to play on the wings and upfront could give us that flexibility that we've lost with Mané.

7.) 03 Jul 2016 23:17:56
Just remember we were the only team last year that had 3+ players score 10+ goals, granted Mane has left and Pelle looks on his way out. But Austin has the potential to reach 15 goals and so does Long. If Rodriguez can get back to where he was 3 seasons ago then he could 10 goals plus.

I think the main problem with our attack last year was inconsistency, Pelle is a good striker. However, he seems to score a clump of goals in a handful of games and then go on massive dry spells.

I'm sure Puel has an idea on who he wants to sign, he's already said he wants to work on the youth academy, so hopefully we should see younger saints boys develop. I'd prefer it if we could develop a squad from our own academy and build a team from that foundation then buying players from all over Europe.

8.) 03 Jul 2016 23:36:50
Totally agree Jay, however if we were to drop them in the deep end now it could not only be detrimental to our season and how we perform but also to their confidence and their future careers.

If we have the right mix of experience being brought in and fresh youngsters with tonnes of ability coming through, then we'd be in a much better position than simply promoting from within.

In the last half an hour though, it's emerged that Puel is targeting Sidibe from Lille, of whom was voted into the Ligue 1 Team of the Season. He can play left back and right back and would most likely be a replacement for Cedric if he does indeed leave for Barcelona.

26 Jun 2016 21:47:13
So, Claude Puel is looking more and more likely to be the next Southampton manager. Who'd be his first signing?

Well, if Mané leaves, I'd personally like to spin the "Wheel of Fortune" and bring in Hatem Ben Arfa on a pre-contract. Claude Puel got the best out of him last season and I think Hatem would be keen to continue that progress under the same manager in a more competitive league that he has something to prove in. Could very well happen, especially considering the competitive new wage structure that the board are obviously rolling out to keep the likes of Virgil and Fraser here until the early 2020's.

SaintMobius

{Ed002's Note - Ben Arfa's contract runs out next week so a pre-contract is of no relevance. He will either be signing a new deal at Nice or moving elsewhere after already holding talks - he won't be moving to Southampton I am afraid.}

1.) 26 Jun 2016 22:19:20
There could have been an agreement behind the scenes between Ben Arfa and Claude Puel however, although I may just be clutching at straws, we just won't know until next week I guess. Either way, I'd love him here but if it doesn't happen then we'll find someone equally as talented.

{Ed002's Note - There was no argument - just nothing to do with Southampton.}

2.) 27 Jun 2016 00:07:03
Yeah I don't think Ben Arfa is a possibility but still any good players who could look for a reunion? Even from other previous clubs.

{Ed002's Note - It doesn't work like that.}

First post in a long time, with all of the rumours flying about if Fonte or Virgil leaving (the latter of which I highly doubt considering how he always praises the club, fans and is critical of his performances on social media) - there's a couple of players I'd love to see replace Fonte, of which the majority are in lower leagues! (Shock horror, there's quality in the championship and not just at Europe's elite) .

Jamaal Lascelles is a like for like player with Virgil; smart, quick, good on the ball and an intrepid ball-playing centreback. He'd be a quality signing and knowing Mike Ashley for the right price he might cash in.

Courtney Hause is similar, however his ability at the present time is slightly less than Lascelles or Virgil. He has the potential to become a perfect centreback replacement and knowing what our scouts are like I think it's highly probable he's peaked their interests at one point or another.

Going abroad, Will Orban of Red Bull Leipzig is extremely similar to Fonte in how he plays, his stature and how he commands the back line. All of these options are quite young and given a season or two rotating with Fonte could EASILY replace him.

I'd like to hear what you think, feel free to be critical or suggest anyone else if you'd like! :-)

24 Aug 2016 16:40:03
Seeming we're in the market for another centreback still; wouldn't it be prudent for us to offer for Mamadou Sakho on loan from Liverpool? Proven quality and is willing to be loaned out by Liverpool.

SaintMobius

1.) 24 Aug 2016 16:55:52
I know that we loaned domestic players when we were in League One (and possible even the Championship) but since we've reached the Prem we only tend to bring in loans from the continent or from another division (Steven Caulker springs to mind! ) - I'm not sure the Board like the idea of 'Bettering opposition players'.

2.) 24 Aug 2016 17:56:30
If he isn't good enough for liverpool, then he isn't good enough for saints. Plus he is the most clumsy player in premier league history. don't think I have seen him make a pass without falling on his ass.

{Ed001's Note - you might want to watch him properly and check the stats. His passing is excellent.}

3.) 24 Aug 2016 20:26:25
Sorry, But just because a player isn't good enough for one team, doesn't mean he isn't good enough for another. different tactics, styles, teammates etc . Not saying he would be a good signing, just a general observation.

4.) 24 Aug 2016 21:34:32
I think him and vvd would be superb.

5.) 25 Aug 2016 08:38:29
Donola Cocacola: spot on with your comments. For instance look at probably 90 percent of players that have left over the past few season, they haven't exactly go on and been amazing for their new clubs. If it was a loan then what's the problem? I think Sakho could be decent in our defence.

6.) 25 Aug 2016 08:49:23
Anyone know what's happened to Gardos? Someone posted a few weeks ago he was still injured but nothing official released.

Papers are saying Chambers is available on loan even though Arsenal are light on cover. I'd take him on loan but would like us to bring in a Fonte replacement for the long term. I'd worry about Sakho's attitude and upsetting the squad - plus he worry's me in possession. He might have good passing stat's but never looks comfortable on the ball.

Last night was a disappointing loss, but let's be realistic - that United team is going to run the league ragged all season long and for many seasons to come.

Højbjerg has impressed me HUGELY (I wish there was an ability to underline that, because it really deserves it) . His composure on and off the field has been incredible and it's only his first competitive start for us; onwards and upwards for him!

As for Redmond, I still believe he could be extremely effective up front; a lot of people seem to forget that it's only his second competitive game playing at striker and he's coming up against a fully fledged Jose Mourinho back line which isn't an easy task even for the most experienced of strikers - he did very well creating the chances he did!

Bring on Sunderland, and let's give everything we've got this week going forward and we'll win 8-0 again! ;-)

SaintMobius

1.) 21 Aug 2016 09:37:10
Well done SaintMobius a well received positive post. It's great to see this and I love your 8-0 prediction. To be honest a hard fought 1-0 win and 3 points would suffice. Onwards and upwards - keep the faith.

2.) 21 Aug 2016 11:39:40
It looked like a 10th team performance.

3.) 22 Aug 2016 12:10:54
Another complimentary high praising post by mikeysfc. Would hate to be next or near you ar any saints games ( you do attend don't you) . My partner and me went to the game and the team tried hard to match Man Utd. Two games in and trying very hard to play the new system. There were a lot of positives from the game. Try to keep the faith and belief. Chill out and relax. We will march on.

4.) 22 Aug 2016 20:06:53
If you were sat near me you would experience real passion!

It's crazy how toxic our fanbase has become in the last few months on social media.

I seriously saw a Saints 'fan' call out someone on Twitter for having an opinion and threatening to fight them before the game against United.

This isn't what Southampton FC is about, if you want an ASBO; go to your local poundland and buy a full Pompey kit and head down to Fratton park for your home games, not to St Mary's.

Here's everything I'm aware of regarding the Jose Fonte conundrum:

As you could probably expect, after winning the Euros Jose's head has been up in the clouds about his ability and performance; and is still yet to re-emerge.

Jose was approached with an improved contract which was essentially a big pay-rise to make him top earner at the club and he said "Yes, sort it out with my agent, I'm more than happy to sign" - then went away on an extended post-Euro's holiday.

But as is normal with Jorge Mendes, he wants more money; and is manipulating the club with 'interest' from further afield and Manchester United to give himself more of a pay-off as well as his client.

The reason Jose did not start on Saturday was not fitness related, it was because he's lost complete focus of his abilities and his ability to captain the team. There would be no point in putting the captain out there if he's not able to captain the team.

Jose has said on numerous occasions he's happy to stay here; he loves the club and respects the armband and the club as a whole - this situation is completely out of character for Jose and if he was able to speak his mind outside of his agents terms of practice I'm sure he'd full us all in as to what's going on.

Expect Steven Davis to pick up the captaincy reigns for a while until Jose becomes himself again; we can only hope this is a blip in his personality but if it's more terminal then we may lose our captain.

Maybe saints boards structure is to sell if the right price comes in? Especially if the player is over 30.

Ed is right, this isn't like last season because now we're playing with 2 strikers up top instead of one. We need more depth, because if Redmond or anyone gets injured and Austin's fitness is as shakey as it has been as of late then who steps in? Gallagher? With European football and the league to contend with we need another top end striker to compliment the others for rotation and fitness.

Sébastien Haller would be my absolute first choice in the department; as for the rest of the squad, I'd like to see Kieran Trippier on loan or maybe Wesley Hoedt of Lazio joining on a permanent to give us assurance of depth with regards to Gardos' injury.

If we're looking down the leagues then someone like Britt Assombalonga wouldn't be a bad shout, maybe even a move for Will Grigg would be a possible inclusion (not just for the chants) .

I meant as a total package on a one or two year deal. £2.5 million transfer fee and the rest in bonuses and wages.

He wouldn't exactly be a game able considering his record, think he's only had one season where he hasn't scored 10+ goals and that was because of an ACL injury!

In the past three seasons, we've never been "linked" with anyone of particular note at that moment in time. We all know that, it's how our transfer business has been conducted for many many years. Mané is a huge loss, but we've lost before and yet we're still here having won more than our fair share of the glory.

Signings will come, make no mistake. Will they be successful? Time will tell, but trust in the club, trust in the board and trust in the black box.
