Any news of any incoming players? Feel like we need 3-4 players to make us stronger this season. With every other team signing players I think we should be signing is making me a tad nervous. Hopefully that little black box has got some players in it.

You can see why Ronald left with the spending power Everton have. Hopefully our new owners will be a generous.

Every other team signing players like they have money to waste. We have never rushed out decisions to sign players!

As for Koeman and Everton they have just pretty much received everything they have spent on players with the sell of Lukaku so the net spend is not even 15m now.

Just spending vast amounts of money would do what.? The last three years we have finished 6th - 7th and 8th, our youth policy is the correct way. We have brilliant Senior Management, they are again part of our strength.
Buying players is a small part of the cost, the wages of Mercenaries and Pre-Madonna players would lead to an unsustainable financial position.

Most Saints fans appreciate what we have. we are never going to compete with Chelsea - Man United - Man City and Tottenham. If we can become a thorn in their side, win and draw a few games against these and beat Liverpool consistently, that's "All Good"

We should live within our means, carry on producing great youngsters, buy a few 18-21 year olds that can be developed and one or two players as needed, not end up with a raft of players warming the bench on inflated wages for what.?

Take Loftus-Cheek, not sure if he will come on a years loan, but hope that we have some sort of Option to Buy or that he doesn't have too many years on his contract and that he ends up with us as per Ryan Betrand and Oriol Romeu

What would be wrong with this selection for 2017-18.?
Early Team Selection

Fraser Forster
Cedric Soares - Jack Stephens - Virgil Van Dyke (Captain) Ryan Bertrand
Oriol Romeu
Ruben Lotus-Cheek - Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg - James Ward-Prowse
Sam Gallagher - Nathan Redmond
Manolo Gabbiadini

Reserves

Alex McCarthy (Still needs a new Plan B too)
Maya Yoshida - Sam McQueen
Steven Davis - Dusan Tadic
Charlie Austin - Shane Long.

3.) 08 Jul 2017 13:40:53
Nothing wrong with that other than the fact you're starting 12 players. Also don't see why people seem to think Gallagher has earnt a starting spot, and still rate Yoshida over Stephens for sure.

4.) 08 Jul 2017 14:32:08
I don't even think we need to make any signings unless players leave. loftus-cheek on loan would be a good shout though. He'll add a bit more "oomph" to midfield and he'll have a point to prove and be hungry for it.

Forster/ Mccarthy

Cedric/ pied
Van dijk/ Yoshida/ Stephens/ bednarek
Bertrand/ targett/ mcqueen

Romeu/ davis/ clasie/ ward-prowse/ hojbjerg + loftus-cheek

Boufal/ tadic (if he stays) redmond/ sims

Gabbiadini/ Austin/ long/ Gallagher

Maybe one more pacy addition on the wings or replacement for tadic if he goes, I don't think we look bad. We just didn't use these players properly last year and losing van dijk killed us a bit.

5.) 08 Jul 2017 16:21:09
Shame - 12 players looked quite good. :-) )

Agree that it will be either Boufal or Tadic and with Tadic he goes missing. Boucle could become very good

Loftus-Cheek has been on my wish list for some time, can't see him going back to Chelsea because they have so many mid-fielders so if he enjoyed his football and we agreed a sensible figure as Bournemouth did with Ake it could work.

MP2 may have something special up his sleeve, and its usual to allow a manager a prodigal son!, whoever it is, needs to have goals in him, not necessarily an out and out striker but a creative offensive midfielder with 6-8 goals in him. Sort of a Steven Davis with goals in him.

Yoshida did well for us last year but he isn't going to displace VVD or Stephens as hardcore Central Defence with the excellent Soares on the Right, if Bertrand stays we have the rear guard on the Team list every game with Oriol Romeu locking down just in-front of them.

Pellagreno will then need to decide on who he prefers with the rest, hopefully Gabbiadini will be a starter and Redmond should push on. Just have a real good feeling about Sam Gallagher, we missed a Lambert/ Pelle player last year and hopefully he can make this his own.

Agree that we don't need many more players and the players that have to push for the right to win their place are:-
Boufal
Classie
Tadic
Long
Austin

Going to be a very interesting year. bring it on!

6.) 08 Jul 2017 16:29:21
I agree milkysaint and I said before I really don't think we need anyone in this year. Yes it's exciting for us fans if new blood comes in but we haven't seen Boufal properly and VVD was out for a lot of last season. We need to continue developing our team from within like we have been a supporting promotion from the reserves into the first team squad.
I'm not expecting us to be busy this transfer window and if no senior first team players move on I would be quite happy with our squad. Callum Slattery has just signed a new contract and he will be knocking on the door of the first team squad if he has a good pre season.

7.) 08 Jul 2017 23:25:47
I think Redmond is mediocre at best, and vvd will be sold. Need more goals from midfield for sure!

8.) 09 Jul 2017 05:14:07
By not investing and getting in a few players that will challenge for first team places shows the club and star players that we are not moving forward. I may be wrong but vvd if he stays which is looking doubtful and we haven't brought in a fonte replacement. Romeu when he is suspended or injured we haven't got the oomph in midfield and tadic needs a rocket up his arse at times. I just think there's areas that need strengthening. It's nice to see optamism from saints fans but by bringing in a new manager and a young centre back is that enough for the season ahead? Not sure.

9.) 09 Jul 2017 11:05:11
On the whole I like these ideas, the squad seems much stronger than it has done in previous windows, now that there is a stronger chemistry.
As for incoming players I like Loftus-Cheek but ideally we would sign another CAM to replace Tadic - who is far more consistent - such as Toornstra (14G,10A), Elyounoussi (10G,13A) or Armstrong (15G,7A), perhaps even more of an unknown like Alioski (16G,14A - Mané had 16G and 9A at a better team, same league) .

Otherwise our defence, holding midfield and forward line look good. Austin was topscorer last season for games played, whereas Redmond was top scorer in goals scored, so neither should be left out.

I posted over a week ago saying we need to invest as we need to replace players gone and to strengthen the team we have. Not many agreed with me. I also said Virgil will most likely go. So we now need to replace fonte, Virgil, mane, and argubuly victor/ Morgan as Romeu will get suspended no doubt and need the muscle in the midfield also need someone to compete with tadic. Hopefully if Virgil leaves we can spend that money on getting a few players in. Our strike force doesn't need anyone else but a cm, winger and 2 centre backs would be perfect.

1.) 21 Jul 2017 18:53:35
So what you're saying then Dan is we need a half a new team almost .

2.) 21 Jul 2017 20:13:26
What are you on about needing to replace Victor and Morgan? Romeu replaced Victor, and we have clasie, ward-prowse, Davis. Yes I think we need another cm, but why are you bringing wanyama in to it? Last season we had van dijk, Yoshida and fonte competing for 2 spots. Now we have van dijk (for now but if he goes we will obviously replace him) Yoshida, Stephens, and a new signing, Bednarek.

We bought redmond last year to replace many

We bought boufal last year to compete with tadic.

I agree that we could do with one more pacy winger.

Know the squad before demanding we sign half a team of new players.

(Who is it you're suggesting we sign by the way? Who is available, within our budget, that would improve our team?

3.) 21 Jul 2017 22:07:29
Nail on the head. If only six teams have a budget to sign very average players for 50 million, what is the point of having so many teams in the Premier League?

The standard of our teams, who cost millions, is hopeless compared to many European teams who beat us time and time again.

Sky money, producing pie in the Sky players on exorbitant wages.

18 Jun 2017 06:15:58
As Katrina and Lander are thrashing out a deal, I find it hard to believe that we will sign any player and get a new manager until the deal is complete. While all other teams are strengthening we are waiting in limbo. Hope this deal is finished soon and we have a war chest to strengthen with.

I agree Dan but what I think is missing in all this speculation is what SFC can offer a new dynamic manager in terms of salary and our intention to spend the necessary money on players to improve the squad. I am no rocket scientist but our vision of a manager for the long term future relies on our ability to keep them. Poch and RoKo are glaring examples of us finding excellent managers but having no chance of keeping them if they are a success which also applies to our top players. If we remain with our philosophy of managing the finances of the club in a strong and stable way (SORRY! ) we will always be seen as a feeder club for the big boys. That's the way big business works and that is indisputable. However I think we as fans accept that in the main as frustrating as it may be, we must just keep trying to be best of the rest and always have the dream that one day we may just do a Leicester but even if we did it would almost definitely be a one if as it was for them. I think the board got rid of Puel for financial reasons rather just football reasons. The attendances were way down towards the end of the season which was due to boring, unattractive football and the board had to move on this for financial reasons. I wonder if our support had been complete and filled the stadium no matter what the standard of football was being played as has happened with clubs in the North that have ultimately been relegated would CP still be in the job? Not sure but money talks and if you were a company employing someone who they felt was responsible for their income reducing they would get rid and that is exactly what they did. I would have offered Garry Monk the job before he went to Middlesbrough as I thought he had a good overall vision of what was needed and seemed the right man for the job. Once again SFC have been sat on their hands and will maybe select someone who is maybe on the list but nowhere near the top of it because they are too slow to act. Seems a carbon copy situation to last year which is worrying.

2.) 18 Jun 2017 15:43:20
Saints always leave it to the last minute get are top targets in an settled down with a full pre season.

3.) 18 Jun 2017 18:24:38
All of this seems to be reactive and based on what's being reported or released by certain media outlets. There will be targets, some who will be interested and some who will not the point is I'm sure no one is sitting around eating ice creams instead of acquiring and interviewing candidates for the job. The only thing that could be raising grey areas is the ownership situation and its not like they are sorting out paperwork for a bag of sweets . I'm sure everything is being done as quickly as possible while ensuring all the decisions are the right ones. or at least as close to.

this isn't a rumour just a observation. I was at the saints vs vitesse game last week and Wanyama was amazing, with clasie, jwp, Davis and Harry reed as centre midfield options if or shall I say when Wanyama gets suspended or injured we are very lightweight and short in the centre midfield. Shouldn't we be looking for someone else who has a bit of height in that position? Like I say just a observation but shaping up to be another good season as long as we can get VVD in.

1.) 06 Aug 2015 12:49:58
It's a fair observation, but while reed might be lacking in strength compared to big vic, he's not afraid to get stuck in. I just wonder with all the talk of how vvd likes to push up, and him being decent on the ball, whether koeman might feel that he can cover in midfield should we be missing wanyama, the same way he used to by last year?? If anyone can teach a centre half how to play in midfield then it's koeman! Just a thought

2.) 06 Aug 2015 13:49:59
Very good point MilkySaint. Think you could be spot on there and it would also make sense as and when Gardos is back into the squad. Would then make any other money in the kitty available for more attacking positions eg. Tadic gets injured and Gaston has not picked up his fitness.

3.) 06 Aug 2015 14:28:27
Was meant to say "toby" not " to by"

4.) 06 Aug 2015 19:40:55
Fonte said a week or so ago that the squad needed another CB and another DMC, and he wasn't wrong.

Whether Saints will be able to grant his wishes remains to be seen.

Why would Sean Dyche be a nasty rumour? He has done brilliant with Burnley and a small budget.

Spot on 👆. Every social media post Southampton put up all the comments are negative never any support. After Liverpool result everyone was saying well done puel now calling for his head again after yesterday's result. We do need to bolster the squad but hard window to do that in. All we can attract is fringe players.

So what? Why would you want to play a player that doesn't want to be at the club.
