Any juicy Saints rumours for us Ed’s?

Personally I’d love Nick Pope and Tarkowski but I’m a realistic Saints fan so not expecting a major overhaul or spend despite us being desperate for 4 or 5 players minimum

Cantonr

{Ed002's Note - Pope is possible. I am not aware of interest in Tarkowski.
Players who I understand have been considered:
The wage issue needs to be addressed as a matter of urgency or the club can expect FFP sanctions.

Nick Pope (G) Southampton are very keen.
Sam Johnstone (G) Spurs, West Ham and Southampton may look to offers in the summer.
Dean Henderson (G) Manchester United want to keep DH but he wants guarantees with Ajax, Borussia Dortmund and Spurs considering their options. Newcastle may offer an immediate solution. Common sense dictates keep Henderson but I suspect the club think otherwise. Perhaps a loan again, else perhaps another hostage being held by Manchester United. Southampton may offer an unattractive solution.
Willy Caballero (G) Short-term solution.
Bartlomiej Dragowski (G) Has asked to leave Fiorentina for more game time. Looked at by WHU as an option if Areola does not sign with Southampton providing an option.
Ryan Fredericks (RB) Cheap solution.
Fabien Centonze (RB/RWB) Metz turned down an approach from Marseille who opted for for Pol Lirola but they are still seeking another RB. Metz say Southampton and Everton have sent scouts to watch him this season.
Nayef Aguerd (CB) Rennes have been given the opportunity to profit on the player by Marseille but have made clear they are not looking to sell. Southampton and West Ham are amongst clubs who have sent scouts to watch him. West Ham should be able to complete the deal.
James Garner (DM) Could push to leave as their is no future mapped out. Southamton are a potential option as they look to competition for Oriol Romeu. If Leeds were to lose Kalvin Phillips, they become an option.
Ibrahim Sangare (DM) Newcastle are keen on the player and the interest of both Leicester and Southampton remains. The player has said that he does not wish to return to France and wants a move to England. Has been watched by a number of other PL sides including Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea who sent an ex-player to take a look at him with two scouts. PSV have no intention of selling and will work hard to avoid a sale. Won't move to Saints.
Harry Winks (DM/CM) Spurs told interested sides last summer that he was not for sale but if the player were to ask to leave the coach would be supportive of that. Aston Villa moved on from Pape Sarr and made an enquiry about his availability - that interest may remain. If West Ham were to sell Rice they might offer an option - as perhaps Manchester United might as a possible Matic replacement. Leicester might also be a possible destination if they were to lose Ndidi, but they have a preferred target in mind. Southampton and Crystal Palace have declared an interest. He would provide an interesting option for Everton but they would need departures first. Offered to Leeds. Sevilla offer a more exotic option.
Ben Elliott (CM) Brighton, Brentford and Southampton have a declared interest in taking him as a Free Agent in the summer.
Joe Aribo (CM) Rangers do not want to sell but the player will be aware of Aston Villa, Southampton and Leicester showing an interest. Wildcard options in London with Brentford and Crystal Palace.
Ainsley Maitland-Niles (RM/RWB) looking for more playing time. Arsenal will try to keep him. Roma will not take up their option. Southampton and Newcastle may offer options.
Angelo Fulgini (CM/AM) Feyenoord had an offer rejected last summer. Southampton and Everton have looked at the player. Seems unlikely.
Keane Lewis-Potter (LW) Hull youngster who has attracted scouts from Southampton, Leicester and West Ham.
Ludovic Blas (AM/RW) Versatile attacking player having a good season at Nantes and attracting scouts from English sides such as Watford and Southampton.
Filip Djuricic (AM/LW) Southampton and Shakhtar Donetsk (can be discounted) have a declared interest. Sassuolo will sell if they gat a €12M offer. Southampton had a bid rejected after he spent time on loan at the club in 2015. Won't happen.
Ritsu Doan (AM/RW) PSV are willing to let the player leave having identified an upgrade to him. Shakhtar Donetsk (can be discounted) and Southampton have shown an interest although getting a Work Permit to play in England may be difficult.
Mohamed-Ali Cho (F/RW) Clubs have had to tread carefully due to his age and him having an agent but there is a great deal of interest in the ex-Everton youngster. Angers will resist a sale once he is 18 unless a very good deal is put to them. A number of sides including Southampton, Milan, Atletico, Spurs and Chelsea have been watching him but he may be best served staying in Ligue 1 for a while longer. Will move to Marseille.
Taiwo Awoniyi (S) Newcastle has an interest. Of interest to Southampton and Newcastle. aught by the WHU scattergun as well. Again, something may be possible for Newcastle.
Michy Batshuayi (S) Everton, Southampton and Leeds offer options.
Khayon Edwards (S) Youngster who, like so many do nowadays, is demanding guarantees of game time and refusing to sign a contract. Southampton are cherry picking such kids and can offer better guarantees than Chelsea who will give him a roadmap but no guarantees. Scouts from a couple of German clubs have looked at him. Arsenal are very keen to keep him.
Armando Broja (F) Southampton want a permanent transfer and are aware that other clubs have approached Chelsea. Napoli have also asked Chelsea for talks. Won't be joining Saints.

Great work Ed, lots of interesting players you've mentioned here.

Couple of questions, what do you mean by wages need to be looked at as a matter of urgency? Is our wage bill much higher than it needs to be?

Are there any potential outgoings for any of our players? I've seen rumours about the club being willing to sell some players.

{Ed002's Note -
(a) A number of clubs have wages running well above the recommended maximum of 70% of turnover - Southampton is one.
(b)
Fraser Forster (G) Moved to Spurs. Out of contract - free agent.
Willy Caballero (G) Out of contract - free agent.
Alex McCarthy (G) Out of contract - free agent. Could extend another year.
Harry Lewis (G) Out of contract - free agent - moving to Bradford City.
Jack Stephens (CB) Out of contract - free agent.
James Ward-Prowse (CM) Spurs made an approach to Southampton and were told he is not for sale, although they remain interested. Newcastle have a declared interest but are not viable. If the player has ambitions the club are unable to meet, they might let him leave for a (very) significant fee. Not first choice for Manchester United or Manchester City but both could be interested.
Mohamed Elyounoussi (LW/AM) Leicester has a declared interest. Southampton will look for an extension.
Theo Walcott (W) Could be made available. MLS perhaps.
Shane Long (S) Out of contract - free agent.}

Hello Ed (s). Got any juicy Saints rumours for us or is it all quite at the moment?

Cantonr

{Ed002's Note - It will be out of date and I would need to check, and the ownership change may impact matters, but last update was:
The wage issue needs to be addressed as a matter of urgency or the club can expect FFP sanctions.

Sam Johnstone (G) Will not be sold in January but Spurs, West Ham and Southampton may look to offers in the summer.
Willy Caballero (G) Short-term solution.
Fabien Centonze (RB/RWB) Metz turned down an approach from Marseille who opted for for Pol Lirola but they are still seeking another RB. Metz say Southampton and Everton have sent scouts to watch him this season.
James Hill (CB) Fleetwood Town youngster attracting scouts from the PL and a declaration of interest from Burnley and Southampton. The issue will be game time at any higher profile clubs so a move to either might be the best move, although perhaps only a stepping stone.
Nayef Aguerd (CB) Rennes have been given the opportunity to profit on the player by Marseille but have made clear they are not looking to sell. Southampton and West Ham are amongst clubs who have sent scouts to watch him.
Ben Elliott (CM) Brighton, Brentford and Southampton have a declared interest in taking him as a Free Agent in the summer.
Joe Aribo (CM) Rangers do not want to sell but the player will be aware of Aston Villa, Southampton and Leicester showing an interest. Away at AFCON so an immediate move is unlikely but perhaps the summer will see the player push.}
Angelo Fulgini (CM/AM) Feyenoord had an offer rejected last summer. Southampton and Everton have looked at the player.
Filip Djuricic (AM/LW) Southampton and Shakhtar Donetsk have a declared interest. Sassuolo will sell if they gat a €12M offer.

Thanks for this insight Ed. I was hoping that Dean Henderson might feature on your list, given there are rumours linking him with Saints, but I suspect there is little substance to it, more wishful thinking.
I must confess, I don’t know too much about most of the players you have listed which strikes me that in this window, we are unlikely to secure anyone who is a shoe in to the starting eleven. At best, we are looking at consolidating the squad and perhaps developing future talent.
This is where our problem is - we are not at the races when it comes to improving the starting lineup. We bring in players who do not offer much more than what we have already got. So in terms of quality on the park, the names might change but there is little prospect of improving the levels we are currently at. That is down to market forces i.e. we are not in the business of bringing in 30 million pound players or am I being glass half empty?!

{Ed002's Note - I would likely not hold your breath over Henderson. Dean Henderson (G) Manchester United want to keep DH but he wants guarantees with Ajax, Borussia Dortmund and Spurs considering their options. Newcastle may offer an immediate solution. Common sense dictates keep Henderson but I suspect the club think otherwise. Perhaps a loan again, else another hostage being held by Manchester United.

As for your second point, traditionally Southampton have done well picking up lesser know players. The scouting system in England has also been very good over the years and the youngster picked up from Chelsea have worked out well.}

2.) 11 Jan 2022 23:49:19
I make you right Ed and absolutely, Tino is a gem. Be great to keep Broja too!

27 Jun 2020 09:00:44
Hi Ed - any news on where Hojbjerg may be headed or possible incomings?

Cantonr

{Ed002's Note - Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (CM) is wanted by Spurs and Leicester and has been proposed to Everton as a well priced midfield solution. Spurs would offer Kyle Walker-Peters as part of the deal but Southampton are in urgent need of cash.}

Is it just coincidence or has our great start to the season been down to Walcott, Redmond, Bednarek and McCarthy being dropped?

Cantonr

1.) 01 Sep 2022 12:55:51
Almost like playing our best players leads to better performances and results - who’d have thought Ralph!

2.) 01 Sep 2022 14:20:24
Somehow I think the ‘best players leads to better performances’ line, is missing from Ralph’s book.
I think in the first games of pre-season, and even the spurs game, the new coaches were not so vocal and demanding. Now I notice, they are right in Ralph’s face, showing him tactics and talking to him. I even saw Ralph consult Rich K.
but who cares, as long as Ralph is not the main tactical man, we should be ok!

23 Jun 2022 09:47:18
Do we play McCarthy against Spurs away first game of the season knowing he will ship in plenty of goals or put Bazanu in knowing his confidence could be shattered for the rest of the season?

Cantonr

1.) 23 Jun 2022 13:30:48
Bazanu if he shows he has it in training

2.) 23 Jun 2022 23:05:51
Pope to Newcastle for £10M - great business for them but would have made a great upgrade on McCarthy.
Who was the last ‘wow’ signing we made - Ings?

3.) 25 Jun 2022 18:27:19
@Millertime were you ‘wow’ed when we signed J-Rod? Or Clyne? Or Bertrand? Mane? Tadic? Pelle? Kyle Walker-Peters? Livramento?
The best signings we’ve made since we returned to the prem (and even before that) have been moaned about because we’ve not gone for more established names
Give them a chance

4.) 29 Jun 2022 10:29:13
My point is, with the squad we have, we have the look and fee of a championship side. Honestly, how many of our players would get into any other PL team - 2 maybe 3?
We need an injection of quality - especially in attack. Who are you relying on to get 10 plus goals? It can’t all be done by the right boot of JWP.
It’s all very well saying give them a chance but the reality is either the team selection isn’t right, or the players as a collective aren’t good enough at the top level or a bit of both.
Personally I blame a lot on Ralph, lovely guy that he is. But there’s a complete lack of confidence as players are constantly rotated.
I would take 17th spot now - in fact, I would bite your arm off to stay up. I hear comments about it would be best for us to go down, regroup and come back stronger. Really?

15 Jan 2021 13:42:56
If we can hold onto our key players below for the next couple of seasons with a few additions, I think we can afford to lose anyone else and still make progress. Thoughts?

Key Players:
Ings
JWP
KWP
Vestergaard
Romeu
Armstrong (possibly)

Cantonr

1.) 15 Jan 2021 13:45:33
And Ralph of course!

2.) 17 Jan 2021 17:20:22
I’d add Bednarek to that list. Or at least one of him and Jannik. Che may also become a necessity if he can become a bit more clinical as him and Danny together can be lethal.

But of course I’d hope we don’t lose 15 first team quality players over the next 3 transfer windows 🤣.

I was playing football manager 2016 last night and looking for wonderkids as you do. I noticed that Hojbjerg was rated by the creators as one of the best wonderkids in world football before he signed for Saints. Now I know he hasn't exactly lit up the prem since his move but it's interesting to see since football manager has more scouts than any team in the world. They must have seen something. Perhaps he will live up to it this season or perhaps football manager is the key to the black box!

Cantonr

1.) 05 Aug 2017 13:24:35
I think he's looked sharp and good in pre season. he's much impressed and I was a huge doubter last year.

16 Jul 2017 11:00:40
It's all well and good having 4 Saints players in the England U21 squad but is anyone else a little concerned as to where the next batch of talent after Targett, Sims, Stevens etc. Is coming from in a few years? There are no Saints players in the England U20s, U19s or U18s! Perhaps we should be looking there for youngsters?

Cantonr

1.) 16 Jul 2017 12:54:06
doesn't always mean anything though, because all those young players probably won't get a chance at their club in the premier league lower leagues yeah. Premier league no, not enough chances handed out.

2.) 16 Jul 2017 13:36:41
We played a few new ones to the squad against St. Gallen yesterday.

Would be a dreadful signing. We gave him a proper test run and it didn’t end well. We need more goals from midfield to ease the pressure on our strikers and he just isn’t the solution.

Like Walker-Pieters and Danny Ings? The try before you buy strategy does actually work sometimes.

Why not try and keep Vestergaard and Ings. Still generating 65mil. I’d buy Sam Johnstone, Pereira and van Aanholt as they have prem experience. Tan Ganga could also be a shout as he struggles to get regular football and is a good utility man. Thoughts?
