This time last season I was hoping for 6th place. This season I'm hoping we don't get relegated.

I feel let down by the board this season. I do feel that MP was not the first choice for the board as a new manager. Since we sacked CP and he did not leave, I was expecting a quick turnaround of staff but that did not happen.
I always view our board as organized and risky, when it comes to recruiting a new manager. If you look at Poch, he was a very risky signing but paid off. I would say Keoman was a risk due to his lack of PL experience but he paid off. Again, we looked for the same qualities in terms of trophies from CP but he did not pay off. And we've clearly done the same with MP. Which, thus far has not paid off. I do feel the road that the club want to be heading, is that they will have wanted a manager with CL or UFEA cup experience. MP achieved the exact same as us last season but in Spain.
I don't want our board to become the sort of club that sacks off manager after manager. I'd like us to hold onto MP, let him recruit new players. Give him some time. At the end of the day he can tell the team to press, but once they step onto the field it's up to them how the play. I think his main problem is his lack of PL experience and the squad he has. The squad is big and we haven't really had any unfortunate injuries yet. We could line up anyway as we have the depth to cover that. He likes the 4-2-3-1 as did CP, but that formation his never worked for us. Keoman and Poch both played 4-3-3. With Poch's side playing with a lot of fluidity.
I think we should look at playing 4-3-3. My strongest team from midfield would be.
CM - Romeu (he would just sit and cover as he has done since he joined)
CM - Lemina (breaks up play brilliant, could become deadly on the counter)
CM - JWP (I'd like to develop him into the sort of midfield that can move the ball fast. Get the ball to his feet and move it out wide fast)
RW - Redmond (Mainly for pace, I would want him to just focus on getting down the flank and putting the ball in low across the face of goal)
LW - Long (Probably the fastest player in the squad has a good work-rate, would make him lethal on the counter)
STR - Gabs (Best out of a bad bunch, our most likely source to score goals, we'd just need to keep the ball out of the air)

Then we have the flexibility to change the formation with subs. For example, we could simply bring on Boufal or Tadic to add the extra bit of creativity. We could take off both wingers and bring on Austin and Davis, switching to a diamond midfield, which would be more effective for playing keep ball, which could be done if we were in the lead. We could take off a CM for a CB and start playing 5-2-3.

Actually I meant to say 7th, not 6th above. Well I can't see Pellegrino being the right man. With benefit of hindsight I'd say it's obvious now we'd have been better off with Silva, or keeping Puel. Puel had some bad luck losing both centre backs, and the free- scoring Austin at the same time last season, he had to play a bit defensive to compensate. I reckon he may have turned things round with Hoedt, Lemina, etc, who new manager has luxery to choose.
But I'll never understand why Austin is not starting, suicidal from Pellegrino, he needs to go. Other than the Austin mystery he additionally has us playing terribly. At times last season we were dull, but we were never as bad as we are this season.
I'd like to see Van Dijk and Bertrand sold, and then sign a whole host of players, a keeper, promote Targett, maybe bring back Chambers and about 3 attacking players. Tadic useless.

3.) 21 Nov 2017 09:34:20
In response to SaintJay
Gabbi is actually an amazing headerer of the ball! when they are hoofed up field he is not so good one on one with a big defender, but from crosses he is oustanding. he is also very quick, he can create goals out of nothing. We just have stopped getting to the byline and making those telling crosses or fast balls along the ground.
Tadic provides zero service towards the box, Cedric's crossing has gone mad? Bertrand is a great crosser of the ball, both air and ground, but is spending so much time covering for Redmond/ Tadic that he is not anywhere near as affective as he was.
As for FF . I have absolutely no idea what this man has to do to be dropped. He is awful? maybe the eds could shed light on why we are sticking with FF despite making so many mistakes?

Quite possibly for the first time in many years I consider us relegation material, if only for the reason we can't score = can't win 3 points.

I was never one of those to turn against Puel, but if Pellegrino doesn't start playing Austin soon then he will lose my backing.
Getting rediculous. Last season we were having problems scoring, then Austin came into the team and we started doing well. He got injured halfway through season, and form of team went down (there were other factors too of course) . Even though injured in December, still our top scorer.
Now, we have started playing two centre forwards. Still no game time for Austin. And one of the centre forwards is Long who hasn't scored for 27 games. And he's not even giving Austin a chance? 10 mins from the bench. Rediculous. Get Austin and Gabbiadini playing and we've got a nice little team. If not we'll be lucky to finish 15th.
I'd like to see Bouffal rather than Tadic too.

Bensaint

1.) 27 Oct 2017 21:25:48
Long's movement is worth starting him alone, he may not score many goals but his pace and work rate is a constant headache for defenders. They never know whether to stick with him or Gabbiadini and risk the other breaking the offside trap or drop deeper and allow them more time and space on the ball. Long always forces mistakes from defenders, how many penalties has he won (and how many should he have rightfully won)? Yes, Austin may technically be a better finisher than Long but he doesn't offer the team work that long does and it doesn't matter how good of a finisher you are, if you're not getting the chances you won't score. With the current formation Long > Austin

Though I do agree with Boufal > Tadic.

2.) 27 Oct 2017 22:43:56
Austin deserves the opportunity, no doubt about it.

3.) 28 Oct 2017 06:48:13
although I'd like to see Austin play but SaintySaintSaint is right even though long doesn't score he's contribution to the team is far greater than Austin's so I'd say let Austin come in as a sub earlier in the match.

4.) 28 Oct 2017 10:33:15
In terms of goals, assists and even penalties earned (given or otherwise), per minutes on the pitch, Austin's overall contribution is FAR greater than Long's.

5.) 28 Oct 2017 11:05:11
Oh and the most important thing. In terms of results too.

6.) 29 Oct 2017 16:38:06
Think Puel didn't do much wrong. new manager, same players, still not scoring, tells me It's more to do with the players then the manager, We came 8th and got to a Cup Final which we should have won for christ sake . That is a Great season! we spent the 90's fighting to stay in the Prem, Relegated to the lower leagues, promoted back to the Prem, a few Great finishes (consistency), There are six teams that will nearly always finish above us. so we came second of the rest. that's Brilliant! And we sack him?

7.) 30 Oct 2017 09:01:01
On paper that sounds like a great season. The cup final definitely but I’ll word our Prem finish slightly differently last year.
We finished 6 points clear of the relegation zone.

Perhaps we should sign another keeper before window shuts? At least as competition for Forster. Seems to be our weakest area, most sides have a decent second choice keeper, not sure we even have a decent first choice.

Bensaint

1.) 24 Aug 2017 10:54:55
I think McCarthy is a pretty decent no. 2. Agree Forster has looked shaky but personally I'd give him one more year.

If he keeps making mistakes then I think we'd be in the market for a keeper next year.

2.) 24 Aug 2017 12:19:33
If also like to see McCarthy in the side. Hoped we would see him last night. maybe he's still not 100% yet after injury. But forster is just not doing it at the moment. With pickford and butland doing well I think he'll lose his England place. He's been poor for a while now.

3.) 24 Aug 2017 17:15:30
Mccarthy, I think he was palace's third choice when we signed him and he's always injured too. can't put all the eggs in one basket with Forster. Time for the club to re-assess that stance, as his form has dipped over the last year. Maybe if we sign some decent competition it will be the kick up the backside he needs. And if it's not then we can play the new guy instead.
I'd say we need a decent, solid keeper. If VD goes we need another centre back, and we could do with a creative forward player, to compete with Redmond and especially Tadic.
I'd play New gk, obvious defence, Rom, Lemina and Davis midfield. Then up front probably Redmond, Gabba and Austin. If not Austin, Bouffal or a new signing. Tadic couldn't score in a brothel.

4.) 24 Aug 2017 23:29:38
I think signing an experienced keeper to compete with McCarthy would be a good idea but not my priority (Attacker more important) . Off the top of my head, someone like Michel Vorm where you know exactly what you're getting and he isn't going to cost the world. Hopefully he's not needed as I don't think it's time to completely give up on Forster yet, the guy clearly has potential. The dip in form is starting to go on worryingly long though I'll admit.

5.) 25 Aug 2017 11:46:10
Michel Vorm would be perfect, just someone solid you don't have to worry about.

6.) 26 Aug 2017 08:56:46
BenSaint. I was also thinking Michael Vorm would be a Good choice and apparently avaliable.

7.) 26 Aug 2017 13:54:39
Should have swapped Gazzanigga for him! (Vorm's a tottenham player isn't he? ) . Only thing is have to ask yourself why does pochettino want to let vorm go and get gazzanigga in? Maybe Vorm is starting to train badly or something like that. Anyway must be tons of solid affordable keepers out there.

I see Oriel Romeu has changed his haircut slightly for this season. I for one am all for it. Nice work Oriel keep them guessing my son!

I think the Southampton fans moan way too much. that's why we're not scoring at home. Puel's had some really bad luck this season. All was fine until Happol Beer Sheva at home. Then Fonte put in transfer request and Austin got bad injury in same week, and we were unfortunate to draw game and go out. We had been playing well before that.
Then Van Dijk got bad injury too. Our best 2 players out for the season, and our 2 centre backs both out.
We should show more solidarity, and Puel should obviously be given more time, but grown men go around acting like spoilt brats these days.

Bensaint

1.) 21 May 2017 07:49:07
I agree some fans moan too much but most of Puel's downfall is his own doing. Exiting Europa was all down to rotation and poor selection. our squad isn't good enough or big enough to rotate! He can't understand the number of games we play because he came from a 'tin pot' league, doesn't work here! Chelsea won the league with the LEAST changes! We had the 3rd most! Our best spell this season and the way we played was when we kept the same team around the EFL final! That is no coincidence! I feel sorry for our strikers, they can't get any rhythm when they are the main man one week and not even on the bench the next! Ridiculous! They can't get any 'form' like that! He has started rotating again and poor performances. so boring! He sets up a strong defensive display at Liverpool to get a hard earned point which is great and then plays the same way at home to Hull! One striker! Shocking! I would prefer another manager, but if he stays he needs to change his mentality or we could struggle next season!

2.) 21 May 2017 14:22:06
Chelsea won the league as the only team to use all 3 subs every game (so far) . We would of struggled even more with injury and fatigue if he hadn't of rotated, he's been a europa league coach for years and that was one of his selling points that the club looked at when appointing him,
Our squad has massively increased in quality over recent years and all players are pretty much on a level setting when it comes to match day. They train 4-5 days a week together and all know that it's a team game, you may be in one week but sat on the bench the next. Imagine if we had no injuries . Who would you play and who would be benched thinking I could get a game somewhere else.

3.) 21 May 2017 19:04:26
If he is a good Europa league why was he so tactically inept to go out so meekly against very poor opposition! No way has our Squad increased in quality over the last 2 years! We are carrying Davis, Forster, Long etc. too many average players not good enough to push on! We are so many points behind in 8th it is so false! We even only stayed there because everyone else lost today! How shocking was that today. can't even play 2 strikers at home. Austin did alright. don't take him off to bring Gabbiadini on. play them together. not rocket science! I agree players are on a level setting. all pretty average especially midfield with the exception of Oriel! If your views are still the same after that shite I have just watched . good luck to you Romsaint . you are watching a different sport to me! Rotation for Saints is ridiculous!

4.) 22 May 2017 11:08:59
It was Austin's first game for 5, 6 months, I think he did the right thing taking him off, standard practise. When did you ever see a player play his first game in 5 months, and play for more than 60- 70 minutes?
Sorry but some saints fans 'don't know what they're doing'! Lol.

Wow this is getting a bit harsh, don't have to assassinate our own players do we? Can't we just say he's on a bad run of form and it would be a good idea to sign a decent keeper and let the two of them compete for the jersey. Surely we can find a solid keeper for 8 millon, this is getting silly. If forster re-finds his form, then we still have a decent back up option.

I guess with Pogba probably going they don't need the money and don't wanna lose more midfielders?
Certainly not going to sell him till Pogba situation sorted.
