Well I guess I am referred to as one of the haters (by the way I have been right behind the various southampton incarnations from division 3 south days) for being sceptical at the style of Puels system.

Far from being apologetic I feel vindicated. My critisism has been passing around for the sake of passing and lack of incision up front. Resulting in attacking against prepared defences, puel seems to have adopted his tactics. while posession still plays an important part his players are now drawing defences then striking swiftly through wing play and adept forward movement. long may it continue

Also I am very happy to see the development squad is playing in mirror image to the First team squad. Probobly a spin off of a more integrated training regime with the youngsters training much more with the first team It is great to see the manager taking development seriously.

We can thank Adkins for his efforts developing youngsters. Pochetino just took advantage of what Adkins left and Koeman didn;t seem to care about development,

Abby, don't you think it more likely the squad are now starting to play as Claude wants rather than him adapting his tactics?

Suggest you listen to the players comments more closely.

I just hope they can continue to perfect his style. If so, we will see some great football.

Saint Martin; cruel comment to someone who admits to having their tail between their legs. CP tactics is totally different and without the player fear of Koeman and he has to contend with Europe, with an incredibly young inexperienced Europe squad. At least the playing of youth philosophy is being adhered to! I agree long may it continue and I would expect this season to be the learning curve of top 10 teams.

Maybe hater was the wrong terminology, but the negativity on this site after loosing/ drawing a few games early season with a new manager was sort of sad. Happens every year.

4.) 27 Sep 2016 14:54:56
Not being cruel but I just believe that when 14 players (max) are on the field starting to play a new system, some will take to it immediately, some will take longer and some may never master it. So, to make immediate judgements will reflect that rather than what the "finished article" will be. I believe the Board and the players should be trusted and recent evidence indicates the new system could be exactly what we need.

5.) 27 Sep 2016 22:48:09
Clearly obvious that a new system, new ideas, new manager and new players were going to take a while to gel, add to that the injuries we had (particularly to Bertrand) and that Cedric and Fonte had about 45 mins of pre season time, it's easy to see where the problems may come from.

Now we've got a relatively fully fit squad and the players have adapted to how Puel wants to play the results are coming.

Correct me if I'm wrong but haven't we basically won the last games reverting to a 4-3-3 for most of the matches especially in the second half. I believe that the return of Ryan Bertrand has made an incredible difference in link up play and playing a higher line, Not having a go at Targett as he was probably playing to orders but I rarely remember him crossing the half way line in the matches he played. So are we playing a new system or a mix of old and new?

learning is made up of the following in ascending order

you acquire the skills
you become fluent at the skills
you maintain the skills
you start to generalise the skills
and then once generalised, adapt the skills
only then can mastery be said to have occurred

So any changes to a new system will take time and practise along with a smidgen of belief.

Just have to say what a great atmosphere in the Northam end for The Sparta Game. The best since the Dell days

Much as I would have liked to have seen more quality signings coming into the club this transfer window I see no point in spending money for the sake of it. Unless a purchase is going to improve on what we have (rather than just duplicate) it is better to have the cash in the bank in January to go again.

I realise that some of our competitors have done some good business but even they may well be making too many simaltaneous changes to reap the benefit at least in the short term.

Lets get behind the boys (and the board) and see where we go.

In any event I am more concerned about the managers tactical system (passing around at the back for the sake of passing) rather than the basic quality of our playing resources

I am with Dorset on this One. The whole body language of the team (and Tadic in particular) has an air of disatisfaction with the set up and style of play we are employing.
I too do not believe Puel will last the season. I have a feeling we will have a new manager by the opening of the january window at the latest.
I am a diehard saints fan but cannot help feeling we are in for a long hard winter.
The board, in my opinion, have made a succesion of inspired decisions but I do not the the Puel is going to prove to One of them. don't get me wrong I am with Saints (and the board) all the way.

Granted Chris We no longer have Mane and Pelle I would just like to see swifter build play to see if they can be replaced in the context of last seasons style with what we have available.
With the slow build up play currently being employed I do not think it is giving their replacements a decent opportunity to show what they could do.

Surely the system is the manager, if you criticize the system de facto you criticize the manage. From what we have so far been served up with the tactical model is fatally flawed.

In my opinion we are quality possesion on passing around, at the back, for the the sake of passing. By the time we reach offensive positions we are met by adequately prepared defences. Instead we should be passing swiftly through the opposition (like last season) and delivering the incisive final pass through stretched defences. (like last season)

I just hope Puel is prepared to adapt his tactics to suit the strength of his playing resources rather than persist with imposing a system that exposes thier weaknesses.

I am red and White all the way, I would just rather be smiling a lot more Saturday afternoons (well more Sundays for a while)

could not agree more I have always considered Boyd an exceptional talent performing well but slipping under the radar because 'he is only Burnley'. Seeing him up close last Saturday reinforced that opinion. In my opinion it is easy to shine in a succesful club but to do so from a stretched squad is far more impressive. I say go get

Not quite true. If Arsenal or Liverpool were to win the FAcup AND qualify for champions league the europa place will go to the runner up in the facup. Obviously not a problem if liverpool play arsenal in the final

Hope you don't mind a dippy blonde clearing things up on europa qualification.
Firstly it is correct that 5th and 6th currently qualify.
Ip a team from the top 4 wins the FA cup the runners up will take thier spot.
If a team outside the top 4 wins the fa cup the place will obviously go to the FA cup winner unless they finish 5th or 6th in the prem in which case the place will go to 7th placed in the prem.

all clear so far!!!!
However what happens if Everton win the europa and qualify for the champions league by that route. Would that mean that champions league qualification only goes down to 3rd place? which would of course mean that only 4th and 5th plus the fa cup winners would then qualify for the Europa
