According to the Telegraph Southampton FC are going to give Hughes time to turn things around. Just how much time can they give a man who is so obviously out of his depth. Maybe they're worried about how much it's going to cost to pay him off but relegation is going to cost an awful lot more.

I’m a fairly positive fan when it comes to prospects and won’t predict loss after loss for the sake of being pessimistic but this is how I see the rest of 2018 going under Hughes;
LEI (Cup) : L
MUN (H) : L
TOT (A) : L
CAR (A) : D at best
ARS (H) : L
HUD (A) : D at best
WHU (H) : W if they don’t turn up, L if they’re on form
MCI (H) : L

That gives us about 13 points after 20 games - we had 19 at that point last season. If we get rid hopefully we can get a win away at HUD or CAR and really have to beat West Ham United but that still only gives us around 15, meaning we need at least 22 from the last 18 games - seeing as we can’t win at home to save our lives that means we probably have to win 4 out of 9 of our away games which I can’t see happening. I’d say if we don’t win at Cardiff or Huddersfield - likely the two teams going down with us at the moment, I’d say we’re already done for and it’ll be too late to get rid of Hughes by then.

Just out of interest, do we need a new manager, or new players. If Gabbi hadn’t missed an open goal, we would probably have won the game. What can a new manager do with the players we have, unless you think we are good enough.

Motivation is a key factor, as well as a positive playing style and instilling belief into the players - it wasn’t so long ago that a large proportion of this squad had a solid home record and there was little question of relegation as a club.
Yes players have moved on and new players of lesser quality have come in, but if you look at the squad Stoke went down with last season there is no way that should have happened - under Puel I think that that team would have been 12th at worst.
Also what Hughes says to the media must feed back to the team, so they think ‘oh we don’t need to change what we’re doing because we are close to succeeding’ but that isn’t the case - we’ve often missed clear chances but have still gone on to win games going back to Koeman/ Puel, we’ve never been clinical but have still won games.
I really like our squad and was excited with our summer signings - I’ve followed Vestergaard, ElYounoussi and Armstrong and was really happy we got them and our team definitely has the capabilities of being defensively sound, classy, quick and effective even if not clinical. Can’t see that happening under Hughes.
However I also think the fan base, albeit understandably venting their frustrations, haven’t helped the situation - we’ve all been used to success and now it’s going to crap it’s infuriating and we’re quick to turn on our team, but I don’t see what Hughes does to help encourage and uplift us except taking a lead we’re inevitably going to lose because we can’t keep ahead in a match to save our lives.
Drop Hoedt, Sack Hughes, start Vestergaard, Captain PEH and give more game time to Obafemi, Targett and Bednarek - if Monk came in I hope that this would be the case and would be happy to see him come in at this point.

A new manager would need to get the squad fit! That is our main problem. Unfit players make bad decisions and can't hold on to a lead. Unfit players have to go off with cramp. Unfit players can't cope with the game mentally.
Cedric's comments in the press that he "knew we would throw it away" says all you need to know about the confidence levels and what Hughes is doing to change it.
A new manager (whoever it may be) needs to take an approach whereby he gets the players fit, but also gives them a reality check and starts working on their confidence!

We need a new manager that’s for sure, we look less fit than we did 12 months ago.

meanwhile cedric speaking his mind which is awesome. shows the players aren't happy with hughes and the overall performance.
